How to Restore Missing New “Folder” Entry (ShellNew) in Windows 7

When you attempt to create an empty folder by clicking the "New Folder" toolbar button in a folder or by pressing the CTRL+SHIFT+N keys, nothing may happen. And the New menu that appears when you right-click on the desktop background may not contain the entry named "Folder".

This happens if certain Folder registration entries are missing, and here is how to fix the problem.

Option 1

Download and apply the Folder association fix (via File Association Fixes) and run it

Option 2: Using the Registry Editor

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press {ENTER}

Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder

In the right-pane, double-click (default) and set its data to Folder

Exit the Registry Editor.

(Thanks Linda.)

Logoff and login back. If the issue remains unresolved, download the Folder association fix (via File Association Fixes) and run it.
