“Your device is missing important security and quality fixes” Error in Windows 10

On a Windows 10 device that has already been enrolled in the Windows 10 Consumer ESU program and fully updated, the error message “Your device is missing important security and quality fixes” may still appear in the Windows Update settings page.

device missing important fixes and cumulative updates - windows 10 consumer ESU

This error is supposed to appear on systems that are not enrolled in the Windows 10 Consumer ESU program. However, on some systems, the error persists even after ESU enrollment and the latest ESU cumulative update installation.

The problem is caused by stale entries in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WaaSAssessment

Resolution

Please download WaaS-reset.reg (zipped). Unzip and run the enclosed REG file. Click Yes to confirm.

Restart Windows.

Additional info

Here’s the contents of the REG file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WaaSAssessment]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WaaSAssessment]
