When you open Services MMC (services.msc), the Task Scheduler service may be in a disabled state. Also, when I open the Task Scheduler properties page all the options may be grayed out, and you’re unable to set the Startup Type of Task Scheduler to Enabled.

In Windows Vista, the Task Scheduler service seems to be non-configurable using the GUI. To reset the Startup Type of the Task Scheduler service to the default setting, download the file scheduler.reg and save it to your Desktop. Then right-click on the file and choose Merge.

Alternately, you can try the SC command to configure services. For more information, see article Configure how a service is started at the Microsoft Technet site.

Wow, that was some spot on advice. My sincere thanks. I read the stuff you told me to also. Thanks for the guidance, I’d have never figured that out.

Thanks Ramesh my Task Scheduler has changed to AUTO but the controls are still grayed out, as quite a few other property controls seem to be.
Do you know how I can regain control over these services.

I’ve read that you can use the ‘sc config’ command from the CMD box to change the services configurations, but exactly how to enter a command to ‘ungrey’ things I don’t know.

Also I understand that the services have specific command names if they have to be altered individually. do you know where such a list can be viewed.

I have noticed on a friends computer that he has a service called ‘Basics Service’ – for hardware interaction, which is started automatically. I have not got it.
Should I have it with Vista Home Premium, and if so how would I rectify it ?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance, Jonty

Thank you so much! I used the article that led me to this (http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/242/1/Error-0×80070032-when-creating-a-System-Restore-point-in-Windows-Vista.html#postedcomment) which half worked, and when I used this article the problem was solved!

    Thanks again!
