Multiple Rundll32.exe (Windows Host Process) Entries in Task Manager

When you open Task Manager, hundreds of Windows host process (Rundll32) processes may be running. While rundll32.exe, located in the “c:\windows\system32” folder, is a legitimate Windows file, you wonder why so many instances are running.

The Windows event log (System) may show the following errors:

Error: (Source: Service Control Manager) (EventID: 7031) (User: )
Description: The NVIDIA LocalSystem Container service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 98 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Run the configured recovery program.

Error: (Source: Service Control Manager) (EventID: 7023) (User: )
Description: The NVIDIA LocalSystem Container service terminated with the following error:
A generic command executable returned a result that indicates failure.

Cause

The root cause is the NVIDIA LocalSystem Container service crashing repeatedly. This prevents the NVIDIA GeForce Experience software from running correctly, resulting in hundreds of rundll32.exe entries.

Resolution

Completely uninstalling all the NVIDIA software and drivers should fix the issue. You can use the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) software to uninstall NVIDIA graphics drivers and packages from your system completely.

Then, reinstall the latest drivers manually from NVIDIA website.

If that doesn’t help, uninstall the NVIDIA GeForce Experience app via Apps & Features.

I hope that resolves the multiple rundll32.exe issue.
