When you access the internet favorites via Internet Explorer Favorites menu or from the Start Menu, the trailing .URL may be shown for the shortcuts.

Normally, Windows hides the extension for Internet Shortcuts. This symptom may occur after installing a third-party web browser.

Method 1 (Use this method only if you have Internet Explorer 6 installed)

Click Start, Run and type this command and press Enter

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

Method 2

  • Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe
  • Navigate to the following branch:

  • In the right-pane, create a string value (REG_SZ) named NeverShowExt
  • Quit the Registry Editor

Method 3

The steps below is applicable to Windows XP systems. The options may vary for Windows 9x systems.

  • Open Control Panel, Folder Options
  • Click File Types dialog
  • Scroll down to the entry URL  - Internet Shortcut
  • Click Advanced button
  • Uncheck Always show extension
  • Click OK, OK and close the dialog.
