About the Office Document Open Confirmation Tool

Microsoft has released a tool in the year 1999, that will require confirmation before opening Office 97 and Office 2000 documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access) launched from within Internet Explorer. By default, Internet Explorer issues a security warning before launching unknown applications and files, allowing users to choose not to open them. This tool gives users the option to treat Office documents in the same way, preventing them from automatically opening when a user clicks on a link to an Office document, or browses to a Web page that hosts an Office document.

Usage

Download the Office Document Open Confirmation Tool from here. System Requirements of this tool as noted in the Microsoft site:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 95; Windows 98; Windows NT

This download works with the following Office applications: Office 97, Office 2000

Note that this utility works fine under Windows XP as well. Run the utility, read and accept the EULA. Click Yes, and you'll see this prompt:

Microsoft Office File-Type Download Option Update

This update will enable the "Confirm Open after Download" option for all Office file-types.

Do you want to continue?

Click Yes, and the option Confirm open after download will be enabled for all the Office document types. You can do the same manually using the Folder Options applet, File Types tab as well.
