Installing and uninstalling NetBEUI protocol in Windows XP
Installing the NetBEUI Protocol
Microsoft Knowledgebase article 301041 instructs: How to install NetBEUI on Windows XP. If you don't have Windows XP CD, you can download the NetBEUI protocol / drivers from here.
How to uninstall NetBEUI protocol?
-
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
Right-click the LAN connection from the list, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, select the NetBEUI entry, and choose Uninstall
Restart your computer if you are prompted to do this.
With this done, the NetBEUI service entry will still be intact in the registry, and Windows XP will try to load the driver every time and fails. The SYSTEM Event Log indicates this:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None

To prevent Windows from attempting to load the NetBEUI driver, open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

Backup the key to a file, and then delete the above key. Restart Windows.
