Symptom

When you attempt to install a software such as NIS or any Windows Installer software package, you may encounter the following error message:

Error 1324: The folder path 'My Pictures' contains an invalid character

Solution

This happens due to incorrect shell folder value type, or due to incorrect data in the registry. To resolve the problem, fix the My Pictures Shell folder paths in the registry accordingly. The default values are given in a tabular column in the following article. There is also a REG fix available in the following page:

Reset the Shell Folders paths to defaults

Don't forget to inspect the value type. If you're using an expandable string data such as %userprofile%, then the registry value type should be of REG_EXPAND_SZ, not REG_SZ.
