Internet Explorer runs in Compatibility Mode or Side-by-Side Mode ?

When you launch Internet Explorer, you may receive a message saying Internet Explorer is being run in Compatibility Mode and not all features are enabled. When you click Help menu and choose About, the About box may display the version information as "Side-by-Side" Mode. This may happen if the Internet Explorer App Paths value is in 8.3 format.

RESOLUTION

  • Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. This opens the Registry Editor.

  • Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\App Paths
\IEXPLORE.EXE

  • Backup the key by exporting it to a REG file. See here for more information.

  • In the right-pane, double-click (default) and type the full path where Internet Explorer resides (usually C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe). In Long File Name format.

  • If IExplore.exe key does not exist, create a new key and complete the above procedure.

  • Open Internet Options, Programs tab and click Reset Web Settings button

  • Restart Windows for the changes to take effect

While some have indicated that this solution works, few have reported the above did not help. Your feedback on this article would be appreciated.
