When you resume from screen saver, you&#8217;re prompted for credentials to get back to your desktop.<\/p>\n<p>The Windows 2003 Resource Kit Tools has a screen saver file <code>winexit.scr<\/code>, known as <strong>Windows Exit Screen saver<\/strong> or <strong>Logoff screen saver<\/strong> that does exactly that.\u00a0However, the WinExit.scr screen saver throws the following error when you try to run it on Windows Vista and higher, including Windows 10.<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Error encountered while creating registry section.<\/div>\n<p>How to make a program which was developed 16 years back, work on Windows 10? This article tells you how to use the <code>winexit.scr<\/code> screen saver to log off a user account after the idle timeout in Windows 10.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Auto Logoff Inactive or Idle Users in Windows 10<\/h2>\n<h3>Using WinExit Screen Saver<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-in\/download\/details.aspx?id=17657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Windows 2003 Resource Kit Tools<\/a> (<em>rktools.exe<\/em> &#8212; 11.7 MB) from Official Microsoft Download Center.<\/li>\n<li>Use 7-Zip or any other third-party archiving tool to open the <code>rktools.exe<\/code> and then open inside the <code>rktools.msi<\/code> file.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/winexit-scr-rktools.png\" alt=\"winexit logoff screensaver in windows 10\" width=\"331\" height=\"184\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Extract <code>winexit.scr<\/code> and copy it to <code>C:\\Windows\\System32<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>) and go to the following branch (for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit systems respectively):\n<pre>[For Windows 32-bit]\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\IniFileMapping\\control.ini\r\n\r\n[For Windows 64-bit]\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\WOW6432Node\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\IniFileMapping\\control.ini<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <strong>control.ini<\/strong> and click Permissions<\/li>\n<li>Add your user account and enable <strong>Full Control<\/strong> permissions. Thus the UAC Virtualization kicks in when you save the logoff screen saver setting, and the settings are written to the redirected location above.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can also edit the above file using Notepad and configure the logoff screen saver settings directly or deploy the file. Placing the file in the Windows directory will apply the settings to <strong>all user accounts<\/strong> on the computer. But, if you use the Screen Saver Settings dialog to configure the screen saver, the configuration is written to the <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20150902-00\/?p=91681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">VirtualStore<\/a> directory, which is per-user.<\/p>\n<p>Configuring the Screen Saver Settings as an administrator doesn&#8217;t cause the virtualization issue.
