Recently I came across a case where the desktop icons rearrange to their default positions after a restart or logoff\/login cycle.<\/p>\n<p>This turned out to be a Permissions issue with a registry key, which kept Windows from writing to it.\u00a0Here are some fixes for this issue, which apply to all versions of Windows, including Windows 10.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix for Desktop Icons Layout Not Getting Saved<\/h2>\n<h3>1) Fix the MruPidlList Registry key in Windows 10<\/h3>\n<p>The desktop icon position and folder views may not be retained if malware has modified some settings under the <code>MruPidlList<\/code> registry key. To fix the settings, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following registry branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\CLSID\\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}\\InProcServer32<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click (default) and set its value data to:\n<pre>C:\\Windows\\System32\\windows.storage.dll<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the same in the following registry path:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Wow6432Node\\CLSID\\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}\\InProcServer32<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then, delete the following branch under <code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER<\/code>. Do <strong>NOT<\/strong> delete the one under <code>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT<\/code>.\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\CLSID\\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}<\/pre>\n<p><em>(The above branch is to be deleted irrespective of the Operating System.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>REG File to automate the above three tasks:<\/b> Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-desktop-icons-guid-fix.zip\">w10-desktop-icons-guid-fix.zip<\/a> and save to desktop. Run the REG file to apply the contents to the registry.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Note:<\/b> If you&#8217;re unable to change the value data and getting a <u><b>permissions error<\/b><\/u>, you need to take ownership of the above registry locations, and then update the value data. For information on how to change ownership, refer to the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-take-ownership-of-registry-keys-and-assign-full-permissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Take ownership of a registry key<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout\/\">Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2) Fix the desktop folder registry key (all versions of Windows)<\/h3>\n<h4>Step 1: Terminate Explorer (Shell) Cleanly<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Press and hold the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd>\u00a0&amp; <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> keys, and right-click on an empty area in the <b>Taskbar<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <b>Exit Explorer<\/b> option. This closes the Explorer shell cleanly.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3617\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/exit-expl-w10.png\" alt=\"exit explorer windows 10\" width=\"269\" height=\"440\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\nThe above applies to Windows 8 and Windows 10. For more information on restarting the Explorer shell, visit:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">Exit Explorer and Restart Explorer in Windows 10 and Windows 8<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-terminate-and-restart-explorerexe-process-cleanly-in-windows-7-and-vista\/\">Terminate and Restart Explorer.exe Process Cleanly in Windows 7 &amp; Vista<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Step 2: Fix Registry Key Permissions<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Switch to the Registry Editor window, and navigate to the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Shell\\Bags\\1\\Desktop<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <code><b>Desktop<\/b><\/code> key, and choose Permissions.<\/li>\n<li>Click Advanced, and delete any &#8220;Deny&#8221; entries if present.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that your user account has &#8220;Full Control&#8221; (Allow) Permissions for the registry branch.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/desktop-layout-1.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK, OK.<\/li>\n<li>See if you can create a sample registry value in the Desktop key to test if you can write to the branch.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Step 3: Reset the Desktop Icon Layout Registry Key<\/h4>\n<p>This step is required only if the problem remains unresolved although you&#8217;re able to write to the <b>Desktop<\/b> registry key.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Using the Registry Editor, rename the key <code>Desktop<\/code> to <code>Desktop.old<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>Esc<\/kbd> to open Task Manager.<\/li>\n<li>From the File menu, click Run.<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>explorer.exe<\/code> and press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Customize the desktop icons layout as you want.<\/li>\n<li>Log off and log back in to check if the icon positions are retained.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Windows saves the desktop icon layout when the user logs off, and the setting is read during logon.
