It&#8217;s caused when a program updates to a new version, causing an additional entry to appear under the &#8220;Taskbar corner overflow&#8221; or &#8220;Customize notifications&#8221; settings page. For instance, this issue often happens with the Telegram Desktop app.<\/p>\n<p>This article describes how to clear the past and current items list in the Customize Notifications dialog in Windows. Information and the script here apply to all versions of Windows, including Windows 10 and Windows 11.<\/p>\n<h2>Clear Customize Notifications (Taskbar corner overflow) Icons<\/h2>\n<h3>Method 1: Using a Script<\/h3>\n<p>Here is a VBScript to quickly clear the customize notification icons.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Close all your running programs.<\/li>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/2587aaa1d2b32c61124f4c6f0d4eac67\/raw\/1844d5f0cdf76f22290904b002c72ada5deac27f\/clear_notification_taskbar_overflow_icons.vbs\">clear_notification_taskbar_overflow_icons.vbs<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Run the script file. See instructions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">Windows 8 &amp; 10.<\/a>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Exit Explorer in Windows 11?:<\/h4>\n<p>Since Windows 11 doesn&#8217;t have the &#8220;Exit Explorer&#8221; GUI menu option, Windows 11 users can use the script method (&#8220;Option 1&#8221;) instead. Or use Task Manager to end the Explorer.exe process. It won&#8217;t be a graceful termination, though.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Taskbar and your desktop icons wouldn&#8217;t be visible now. From the Task Manager&#8217;s File menu, launch the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\Local Settings\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\TrayNotify<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete the two values, namely <b>IconStreams<\/b> and <b>PastIconsStream<\/b>. If they&#8217;re missing, proceed to the next step.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, if using Windows 11 22H2 and higher, navigate to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Control\u2002Panel\\NotifyIconSettings<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <strong>NotifyIconSettings<\/strong> and choose Delete.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>From the Task Manager&#8217;s File menu, launch <code>Explorer.exe<\/code>. This starts the Windows shell again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>The Windows shell is the graphical user interface for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Its primary elements are the desktop, the taskbar, and the Start menu.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3>Additional Tip<\/h3>\n<h4>How to remove a specific tray icon?<\/h4>\n<p>In Windows 11 22H2 and above, you can remove a specific tray icon rather than clearing the entire listing. For example, you may want to remove the PowerToys entry or entries from the following page:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/tray-overflow-icon-remove-single-entry.png\" alt=\"taskbar tray overflow remove single entry\" width=\"610\" height=\"421\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the following key in the Registry Editor:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Control\u2002Panel\\NotifyIconSettings<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Expand the branch and click on each subkey.
