The contents of the USB stick will be <strong>erased<\/strong> during the disk creation process.<\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"rufus\"><\/a>Option 1: Using Rufus to create a bootable USB disk<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Rufus<\/a> is an advanced ISO\/DVD to USB tool that can create bootable USB flash drives from an ISO.<\/p>\n<p>Download and run <a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Rufus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Connect an empty USB stick to your computer.<\/p>\n<p><em>(If you haven&#8217;t downloaded the ISO yet, first download it. You can use Rufus to download it. But if you want to use the setup disk on MBR-based systems, select <strong>MBR<\/strong> from the dropdown. For example, here are the options provided:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Remove requirement for an online Microsoft account.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Create a local account with user name __________.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Set regional options to the same values as this user&#8217;s.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Disable data collection (Skip privacy questions.)<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Disable BitLocker automatic device encryption.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/rufus-iso-to-usb-4.png\" alt=\"rufus create usb setup disk from windows 10 or 11 iso\" width=\"548\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>(For example, if you want to use this USB on a system that doesn&#8217;t meet the Windows 11 system requirements, enable the &#8220;Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0&#8221; checkbox.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>If you want the <strong>default<\/strong> settings, click <strong>OK<\/strong> without modifying any option in the above dialog.<\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> when you see the confirmation window:<\/p>\n<p>WARNING: ALL DATA ON DEVICE &#8216;ESD-USB (F:) (16 GB)&#8217; WILL BE DESTROYED.<\/p>\n<p>To continue with this operation, click OK. Here are the contents of the USB setup disk we created.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76074\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/rufus-iso-to-usb-7.png\" alt=\"rufus create usb setup disk from windows 10 or 11 iso\" width=\"751\" height=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Additional note<\/h4>\n<p>Rufus creates a hidden FAT partition on the USB stick, which is not visible in File Explorer. The hidden partition contains the UEFI boot files. For more information, see the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/cant-boot-ntfs-formatted-usb-setup-disk\/\">Cannot boot from NTFS-formatted Windows USB Setup Disk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"create_usb_disk_without_using_software\"><\/a>Option 2: Create a USB Setup Disk without using any software &#8211; for MBR-based disks<\/h3>\n<p>For <strong>legacy<\/strong> (BIOS\/MBR) systems, follow these instructions to create a Windows 10 Setup USB disk.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Insert the USB flash disk into the drive.<\/li>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> and run the <strong><code>diskpart<\/code><\/strong> command.<\/li>\n<li>Run the <code>list disk<\/code> command to see the list of drives. <strong>Carefully<\/strong>\u00a0note down the disk # for your USB media. It&#8217;s better to disconnect additional external drives before running this command to make it easy to identify the correct USB stick.<\/li>\n<li>In my case, disk 3 is the USB drive, so I type the following command to select the disk:\n<pre>select disk 3<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then, run the following command to <strong>completely erase<\/strong> the contents of the USB disk:\n<pre>clean<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/diskpart-iso-to-usb-1.png\" alt=\"create windows 10 usb setup media - diskpart\" width=\"699\" height=\"389\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Then run the following commands:\n<pre>create partition primary\nselect partition 1\nactive\nformat fs=ntfs quick<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/diskpart-iso-to-usb-2.png\" alt=\"create windows 10 usb setup media - diskpart\" width=\"699\" height=\"443\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Once done, run the <code>assign<\/code> command, and then type <code>exit<\/code> to come out of the Diskpart command environment. Now, Windows reassigns a drive letter (<code>G:\\<\/code> in this example) for your USB drive.<\/li>\n<li>Mount the Windows Setup ISO by double-clicking on it.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/diskpart-iso-to-usb-4.png\" alt=\"create windows 10 usb setup media - diskpart\" width=\"684\" height=\"119\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Copy the entire contents of the mounted ISO drive (<code>H:\\<\/code>) to your USB flash drive (<code>G:\\<\/code>)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9963\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/diskpart-iso-to-usb-3.png\" alt=\"create windows 10 usb setup media - diskpart\" width=\"699\" height=\"278\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Switch to the admin Command Prompt window and run the following commands, where <code>H:\\<\/code> is the drive letter of the mounted Windows ISO and <code>G:\\<\/code> is the USB drive letter:\n<pre class=\"cmd\">H:\ncd\\boot\nbootsect.exe \/nt60 G:<\/pre>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see the following output:<\/p>\n<pre>Target volumes will be updated with BOOTMGR compatible bootcode.\n\nG: (\\\\?\\Volume{589fd5fb-bd84-11e8-a90e-1866da06b846})\n\n    Successfully updated FAT32 filesystem bootcode.\n\nBootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes.<\/pre>\n<p>The <code>bootsect.exe<\/code> command-line builds the boot sector code in the specified partition.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That&#8217;s it! The USB drive is now bootable, and you should be able to install Windows from it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"microsoft_usb_dvd_tool\"><\/a>Option 3: Using Windows USB\/DVD Download Tool<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s <b>Windows USB\/DVD Download Tool <\/b>takes an ISO image and creates a bootable USB device that can be used to install Windows on legacy (BIOS\/MBR-based) systems. The utility can also create a Windows installation DVD from the ISO file.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Important:<\/strong> The Windows USB\/DVD tool formats the disk as NTFS, meaning it <strong>will not work<\/strong> on UEFI-based systems. For UEFI-based systems, use Method 1 (Rufus)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-GB\/download\/details.aspx?id=56485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows USB\/DVD Download Tool<\/a>. To copy the ISO image to a USB flash drive, ensure that the drive has sufficient disk space. Different OSes have different ISO file sizes.
