I have been using monitors that have controls on the front or underneath the bezel all these years. Now, with the new monitor, I find it a little bit inconvenient to reach out to the button on the backside every time I need to turn off or turn on the display.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8811\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jog-button-rear-monitor-samsung.png\" alt=\"Samsung monitor jog button\" width=\"226\" height=\"157\" \/>Moreover, the only button the Samsung C24F390 monitor has is a JOG Button, a multi-directional button that helps navigate. The JOG button is on the rear left side of the product. The switch can be used to power on, off, move up, down, left or right, and select options on the on-screen display menu.<\/p>\n<p><em>To turn off this monitor, it takes three button presses: Press the center of the JOG button \u2192 (when the on-screen menu appears), press the JOG button downward \u2192 press the center.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, I need a desktop shortcut or hotkey method to turn off the display, so that I no longer need to use the hardware buttons on the monitor. A mouse move or keyboard input should turn on the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>Macbooks come with built-in keyboard shortcuts to turn off display &#8212; using <kbd>Control<\/kbd>+<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>+<kbd>Power<\/kbd> or <kbd>Control<\/kbd>+<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>+<kbd>Media Eject<\/kbd>. Windows doesn&#8217;t have any such preprogrammed keyboard shortcut to turn off the display.<\/p>\n<p>Here are various programs using which you can turn off the monitor with a desktop shortcut or command-line in Windows.<\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<p><strong>Turn off the monitor with a shortcut:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#nircmd\">using NirCmd automation tool<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#wizmo\">using Wizmo automation tool<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#powershell\">using PowerShell command<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#ahk\">using an AutoHotKey script<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Turn off Monitor Using Shortcut<\/h2>\n<h3><a id=\"nircmd\"><\/a>Turn off monitor using NirCmd<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/utils\/nircmd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">NirCmd<\/a> is a multi-purpose command-line automation tool that we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/?s=nircmd\">have covered<\/a> many times previously on this website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8807\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/nircmd.png\" alt=\"nircmd utility\" width=\"335\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To turn off the monitor(s) using NirCmd, use this command:<\/p>\n<pre>nircmd.exe monitor off<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8809\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/turn-off-monitor-nircmd.png\" alt=\"nircmd monitor off shortcut\" width=\"126\" height=\"120\" \/>Create a desktop shortcut for the above command-line and assign a hotkey to the shortcut (e.g., <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Alt<\/kbd> + <kbd>M<\/kbd>). You can also pick a neat-looking icon by browsing the shell32.dll or imageres.dll files located in the <code>Windows\\System32<\/code> folder.<\/p>\n<p><em>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/nircmd.nirsoft.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">NirCmd Command Reference<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3>Turn off a specific monitor in a multi-monitor setup<\/h3>\n<p>To turn off a particular monitor in a multi-monitor setup, you may try Nirsoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/articles\/turn_off_single_monitor_command_line.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ControlMyMonitor<\/a> utility.\u00a0 ControlMyMonitor allows you to view and modify the settings of your monitor (Also known as &#8216;VCP Features&#8217;), like brightness, contrast, sharpness, RGB color balance, OSD Language, Input Port (VGA, DVI, HDMI ), and more. You can modify the monitor settings from the GUI and the command-line.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/controlmymonitor.png\" alt=\"controlmymonitor turn off primary monitor using desktop shortcut\" width=\"613\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The following command-line turns off the specified monitor (e.g. <code>\\\\.\\DISPLAY1\\Monitor0<\/code>)<\/p>\n<pre>ControlMyMonitor.exe \/SetValue \"\\\\.\\DISPLAY1\\Monitor0\" D6 2<\/pre>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s note:<\/strong> After turning off a monitor using the above command-line, I could not turn it back on by setting the value to 1. The only way I could turn on the monitor was to use the monitor power switch.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"wizmo\"><\/a>Turn off monitors Using Wizmo<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.com\/wizmo\/wizmo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Wizmo<\/a> from Gibson Research Corporation is another multi-purpose command-line tool similar to NirCmd.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/wizmo.png\" alt=\"wizmo from grc\" width=\"348\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To turn off the monitors using Wizmo, run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>wizmo.exe monoff<\/pre>\n<p>You can create a desktop shortcut to it and assign a hotkey. Moving the mouse will turn it on again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\">\n<h4>Automatically turn off the monitor when locking the computer<\/h4>\n<p>Whenever we take a short break from our computer, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-automatically-login-to-windows-and-then-lock-the-workstation\/\">lock the workstation<\/a> for security reasons, mostly using the <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>L<\/kbd> key combo.<\/p>\n<p>However, many of us have the habit of keeping the monitor turned on even when going for a break. Until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/lock-screen-display-off-timeout-windows-10-8\/\">display timeout<\/a> event kicks in and turns off the display, it&#8217;s a wastage of electricity and increased wear &amp; tear of the monitor.
