{"id":871,"date":"2009-03-10T18:06:10","date_gmt":"2009-03-10T12:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=871"},"modified":"2024-05-06T21:15:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T15:45:04","slug":"windows-resource-protection-could-not-start-repair-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-resource-protection-could-not-start-repair-service\/","title":{"rendered":"SFC: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you run the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) using the <code>\/scannow<\/code> parameter to restore missing or corrupt system files, the following error may occur.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"err\"><b>Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/sfc-cant-start-repair-service.png\" alt=\"SFC error - Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service\" width=\"726\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you may experience problems running Windows Installer Setup files and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/install-cab-msu-updates-mu-catalog\/\">installing fixes<\/a> from Windows Update.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above error occurs due to one or more of the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The TrustedInstaller (Windows Modules Installer) service is disabled. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/\">TrustedInstaller service<\/a> has full access to Windows Resource Protection (WRP) files and registry keys. This service needs to be running to restore missing or corrupted WRP resources. The TrustedInstaller service starts on-demand when running the System File Checker.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">The supporting DLL files required to run Sfc.exe may be missing. Some of the modules needed are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">wrpint.dll and wrpintapi.dll. The missing module names will be reported in the <code>CBS.log<\/code> located in the <code>C:\\Windows\\System32\\CBS\\<\/code> folder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>There is file system corruption on the system drive. This will be evident if DISM reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/dism-error-1392-file-corrupted-unreadable\/\">error 1392<\/a> (&#8220;File or directory is corrupted&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Solution<\/h2>\n<h3>1) Start the Trusted Installer Service<\/h3>\n<p>To resolve the &#8220;Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service&#8221; error, set the startup type of the <strong>Windows Modules Installer<\/strong> (&#8220;TrustedInstaller&#8221;) service to manual.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, and click Run to launch the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Type <b>services.msc<\/b>, and click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <\/span><strong>Windows Modules Installer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Set its Startup type to <strong>Manual<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click OK.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/sfc-err-2.png\" width=\"408\" height=\"217\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Using Command-line<\/h4>\n<p>To accomplish the same using command-line, open Command Prompt as administrator. Run the following commands.<\/p>\n<pre>sc config trustedinstaller start= demand\r\nnet start trustedinstaller<\/pre>\n<p>That should fix the problem. Another option would be to run <code>Sfc \/scannow<\/code> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-sfc-offline-windows-7-vista\/\">in offline mode<\/a> (Windows Recovery Environment).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2) Restore Missing DLL files<\/h3>\n<p>Open the <code>C:\\Windows\\Logs\\CBS\\CBS.log<\/code> file and see if you find entries like the ones below:<\/p>\n<pre>Info CBS TiWorker: Client requests SFP repair object.\r\nInfo CBS Failed to load sfp DLL from path: C:\\WINDOWS\\winsxs\\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_<strong>10.0.22000.975<\/strong>_none_0493932d4c9bedcc\\\\<strong>wrpint.dll<\/strong> [HRESULT = 0x8007007e - ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND]\r\nInfo CBS Failed to initialize WRP integrity check and repair. [HRESULT = 0x8007007e - ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND]\r\nInfo CBS Failed to get class factory for service: 1 [HRESULT = 0x8007007e]\r\nInfo CBS Trusted Installer is shutting down because: SHUTDOWN_REASON_AUTOSTOP\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><em>[Scroll horizontally to see the missing file name(s) and the version]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you find those errors in the log file, download the exact version (which, in this case, is <code>10.0.22000.975<\/code>) of the file <code>wrpint.dll<\/code> from Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/download-missing-system-files-dll-exe-sys-from-microsoft-site\/\">via WinBIndex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, check if the file <code>C:\\Windows\\Servicing\\wrpintapi.dll<\/code> exists. If it&#8217;s missing, you need to download the appropriate version of the file via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/download-missing-system-files-dll-exe-sys-from-microsoft-site\/\">WinBIndex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Instructions for copying those files<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Copy the downloaded DLLs to &#8220;C:\\DLLs\\&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Start Command Prompt as TrustedInstaller by downloading AdvancedRun (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/\">More Information<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Close AdvancedRun.<\/li>\n<li>Run these commands from the Command Prompt (TrustedInstaller) window:<br \/>\n<em>(<strong>Note:<\/strong> The winsxs subfolder name below corresponds to the above CBS.log entries. Please change the path accordingly in your case.)<\/em><\/p>\n<pre>cd \/d C:\\DLLs\r\ncopy wrpint.dll \"C:\\WINDOWS\\winsxs\\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22000.975_none_0493932d4c9bedcc\\\"\r\ncopy wrpintapi.dll C:\\Windows\\Servicing\\\r\nexit\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open admin Command Prompt, and try running <code>SFC \/SCANNOW<\/code> now.
