Occasionally, Google Chrome may not start correctly due to Chrome user profile corruption, a rogue extension or even due to malware. When you launch Chrome, the Task Manager may show chrome.exe<\/em> as running but no user interface may be visible. This post tells you how to fix Google Chrome web browser when it fails to launch.<\/p>\n

How to Fix Google Chrome if It Does Not Open<\/h2>\n

First, try to start Google Chrome in Incognito mode. To do so, run the command chrome --incognito<\/code> from your Run dialog.<\/p>\n

If the incognito mode (also known as private browsing mode) opens correctly, then the problem is not due to missing Chrome binaries. In that case, reinstalling Chrome is not required.<\/p>\n

Google Chrome start problem can be caused by corrupted Chrome user data. Renaming the Default<\/strong> user profile folder might help. Follow these steps:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl<\/kbd> + Shift<\/kbd> + Esc<\/kbd>).<\/li>\n
  2. Make sure that no instance of chrome.exe<\/code> is running. If you find any, terminate every instance of chrome.exe<\/code>.<\/li>\n
  3. Open File Explorer and browse the following folder.\n
    %LocalAppData%\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data<\/pre>\n
    Copy the above path in Explorer address bar and press ENTER<\/kbd><\/em><\/p>\n
    This opens the Chrome’s User Data folder.<\/li>\n
  4. Select the Default<\/strong> folder from the list.<\/li>\n
  5. Rename Default<\/code> to Default-old<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Renaming the default user profile folder should enable you to launch Google Chrome. You’ll see the “Welcome” page now.<\/p>\n

    After logging in to your Google account. Your bookmarks, extensions, apps, and other user data such as history, settings, themes, tabs, passwords, addresses, phone numbers, payment methods are automatically synced.<\/p>\n
    Turned off sync? You can recover bookmarks and cookies offline<\/h4>\n
    In case you had turned off syncing, then you’ll need to install each extension manually. As far as bookmarks and cookies are concerned, you can get them from the default-old<\/code> folder. All you need to do is copy the following files:<\/p>\n
    C:\\Users\\{username}\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data\\Default-old\\Favicons-journal\r\nC:\\Users\\{username}\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data\\Default-old\\Bookmarks\r\nC:\\Users\\{username}\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data\\Default-old\\Cookies\r\nC:\\Users\\{username}\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data\\Default-old\\Favicons\r\n<\/pre>\n
    to the following folder:<\/p>\n
    C:\\Users\\{username}\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data\\Default<\/pre>\n

    That should restore your bookmarks and cookies. Once everything is fine, turn on syncing via Chrome Settings. Syncing to the cloud is a safe backup method.<\/p>\n
    Editor’s Note:<\/strong> In the above example, we’ve assumed that the Default<\/strong> user profile is problematic. If you have a problem with Chrome not launching a particular profile, you’ll need to rename that particular profile folder instead of the Default<\/strong> folder. Additional profile folders are named Profile 2<\/strong>, Profile 3<\/strong>, Profile 4,<\/strong> and so forth.<\/p>\n

    Additionally, it’s always a good idea to check for malware in the computer. Download Malwarebytes (Free) and run a full scan.<\/p>\n
