Sometimes, you may end up add a program to the Open with list inadvertently, and wonder how to remove it from the menu.<\/p>\n<p>This article explains how to remove unwanted entries from the <strong>Open with<\/strong> menu for a particular file type as well as for all file types. For the purposes of illustration, let&#8217;s take the case of <code>.txt<\/code> file type.<\/p>\n<h2>Contents<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#openwith_applications\">Remove unwanted entries from the &#8220;Open with&#8221; menu for <strong>ALL<\/strong> file types<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#openwith_filetype\">Remove unwanted entries from the &#8220;Open with&#8221; menu for a specific file type<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#openwithlist\">OpenWithList registry key<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#openwithprogids\">OpenWithProgIDs registry key<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#other\">Other registry locations (rarely used by programs)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Scenario<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say a program named <strong>Compare It!<\/strong> was accidentally added in the Open with menu (and the Open with &#8220;Choose a program&#8221; dialog), and we&#8217;re now going to remove the unwanted entry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-1.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted entries in open with menu and dialog\" width=\"697\" height=\"364\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8605\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-2.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted entries in open with dialog and menu\" width=\"699\" height=\"591\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8604\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hand.png\" alt=\"hand point icon\" width=\"49\" height=\"27\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6419\" \/><em>Before proceeding, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/create-restore-protection-point-rollback-windows\/\">create a System Restore point<\/a> as a safety measure.<\/li>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"openwith_applications\"><\/a>Remove Unwanted Items from &#8220;Open with&#8221; menu for ALL file types<\/h2>\n<p>To remove an unwanted program from the Open with menu and the &#8220;Choose a program&#8221; dialog, use the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following location:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Applications\\application_name.exe<\/pre>\n<p>In this case, the application <strong>Compare It!<\/strong> &#8216;s executable file name <em>wincmp3.exe<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <code>wincmp3.exe<\/code> key and choose Delete<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-9.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted entries in open with menu and dialog\" width=\"701\" height=\"331\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8611\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Thats it! This removes the application from the Open with menu and dialog box. The change is effected for all file types.<\/h4>\n<h2><a name=\"openwith_filetype\"><\/a>Remove unwanted items from &#8220;Open with&#8221; menu for a specific file type<\/h2>\n<h4><a name=\"openwithlist\"><\/a><strong>OpenWithList<\/strong> key<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>OpenWithList<\/strong> key contains a list of values, with each value containing the executable name of an application. Examples: <em>paint.exe<\/em>, <em>notepad.exe<\/em>, <em>wordpad.exe<\/em> etc. The applications listed under this key for a file extension appear under the Open With dialog box, as well as in the Open With sub-menu in Windows.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following location:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\FileExts\\.txt\\OpenWithList<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<p>In the right pane, the registry value &#8220;<strong>b<\/strong>&#8221; references <code>wincmp3.exe<\/code> which is the executable file of <strong>Compare It!<\/strong> utility.<\/li>\n<li>To remove the program from <strong>Open with<\/strong> dialog, right-click on its entry and click <strong>Delete<\/strong>. Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> when prompted for confirmation.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-3.png\" alt=\"Remove invalid entries from Open with menu and dialog\" width=\"701\" height=\"230\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8601\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Voila!<\/em> The <strong>Compare It!<\/strong> entry is now removed from the Open with menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-7.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted entries in open with menu and dialog\" width=\"704\" height=\"353\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8607\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s note:<\/strong> Deleting that key has removed <strong>Compare It!<\/strong> from the <strong>Open with<\/strong> listing, and solved the purpose of this article! However, I&#8217;d like to tell you about <strong>other registry locations<\/strong> from where the <strong>Open with<\/strong> entries can be populated from (though the other locations are only rarely used by programs).<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"openwithprogids\"><\/a><strong>OpenWithProgids<\/strong> key<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>OpenWithProgIDs<\/strong> key contains a list of values, with each value containing a ProgID. Some ProgID examples are <em>txtfile<\/em>, <em>jpegfile<\/em>, <em>giffile<\/em>, <em>Wordpad.Document.8<\/em>, <em>xmlfile<\/em> and so forth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>How to know which program a ProgID is pointing to?<\/h4>\n<p>To better understand what ProgID is, have a look at the image below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-5.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted items from open with menu and dialog\" width=\"701\" height=\"257\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8602\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And, to know more about each ProgId (e.g., <em>rtffile<\/em>), you&#8217;ll need to visit the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\<<em>ProgID<\/em>> branch and its subkeys to know which executable it&#8217;s pointing to. In the case of <code>.rtf<\/code> files the ProgID <code>rtffile<\/code> is pointing to <code>wordpad.exe<\/code><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-6.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted entries in open with menu and dialog\" width=\"701\" height=\"218\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8608\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that you know how to map a ProgID to the executable file, let&#8217;s proceed with the registry edit.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>In the Registry Editor, go to the following <strong>OpenWithProgids<\/strong> key, located next to &#8220;<strong>OpenWithList<\/strong>&#8220;:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\FileExts\\.txt\\OpenWithProgids<\/pre>\n<p>In the right-pane, each entry points to a Programmatic Identifier (ProgId) instead of an .exe file name. Sometimes, programs use this key to add itself to the <strong>Open with<\/strong> dialog. For <code>.txt<\/code> files, <code>txtfile<\/code> is the default ProgId listed in the <strong>OpenWithProgids<\/strong> key.<\/li>\n<li>If you find any unwanted entries there, right-click and choose Delete. In our case we didn&#8217;t find any extra ProgIDs.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-8.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted entries in open with menu and dialog - openwithprogids\" width=\"701\" height=\"207\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8609\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3><a name=\"other\"><\/a>More &#8220;Open with&#8221; Registry locations &#8212; rarely used by programs<\/h3>\n<h4>SystemFileAssociations\\<<em>perceived type<\/em>><\/h4>\n<p>The OpenWithList and OpenWithProgIDs may be implemented on a <em>Perceived Type<\/em> basis, in addition to per-file type basis. If the <em>Perceived Type<\/em> for a file extension is defined as <code>image<\/code>, the OpenWithList and OpenWithProgIDs subkeys present under the following key will be used by Windows to generate the <strong>Open with<\/strong> listing:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\SystemFileAssociations\\image\\<\/pre>\n<p>The Perceived type for a file extension could be <em>audio<\/em>, <em>image<\/em>, <em>system<\/em>, <em>text<\/em> or <em>video<\/em>. The perceived type is assigned in file extension registry key, in a value named PerceivedType. Example, for .rtf files, the PerceivedType is <code><strong>document<\/strong><\/code><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8602\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8602\" style=\"width: 691px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/open-with-remove-unwanted-items-5.png\" alt=\"remove unwanted items from open with menu and dialog\" width=\"701\" height=\"257\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8602\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8602\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PerceivedType for .rtf file types is &#8220;document&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>&#8220;Open with&#8221; &#8211; Complete list of registry locations<\/h4>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;ve removed the OpenWithList and OpenWithProgIDs entries as instructed above and still an unwanted entry appears in the listing. In that case, you&#8217;ll need to throughly inspect these additional registry locations in addition.
