This post tells you how to prevent Disk Cleanup and the modern Storage Sense tools from clearing files in your Downloads folder.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Prevent Disk Cleanup from Emptying your Downloads folder<\/h2>\n<p>When you start Disk Cleanup normally, the Downloads option (aka, disk cleanup handler) is unchecked by default. However, if the disk space is dangerously low, Task Scheduler run Disk Cleanup with the <code>\/LOWDISK<\/code> or <code>\/VERYLOWDISK<\/code> parameter silently. Follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\VolumeCaches\\DownloadsFolder<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <code>DownloadsFolder<\/code> key, click Export. Save the branch to a REG file.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <code>DownloadsFolder<\/code> key, and choose Delete.<\/li>\n<li>Quit the Registry Editor.\n<p>Disk Cleanup&#8217;s &#8220;Downloads&#8221; option should now be gone.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/disk-cleanup-downloads-folder-2.png\" alt=\"disk cleanup remove downloads option\" width=\"372\" height=\"274\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Prevent Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense from Emptying your Downloads folder<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/storage-app-find-files-taking-disk-space-w10\/\">Storage Sense<\/a> (Storage settings) is the modern app which replaces the Disk Cleanup classic desktop tool. Storage Sense frees up space by deleting things like Recycle Bin contents, temporary files, and &#8220;Previous versions of Windows&#8221; files.<\/p>\n<p>Since Windows 10 v1809, Storage Sense also has options to clear the Downloads folder. However, the user can choose whether or not the Downloads folder can be cleared by Storage Sense.<\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps to exclude the Downloads folder from automatic cleanup by Storage Sense:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, Settings.<\/li>\n<li>Click System, and select Storage<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/storage-sense-settings.png\" alt=\"storage sense cleanup settings\" width=\"587\" height=\"246\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Change how we free up space automatically<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Set &#8220;Delete files in my Downloads if they have been there for over&#8221; option to <strong>Never<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/storage-sense-settings-downloads.png\" alt=\"storage sense clear downloads folder\" width=\"587\" height=\"245\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Close the Settings window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That&#8217;s it!
