While it&#8217;s not a problem for systems with bigger hard drives, you most likely would be running out of disk space in systems with a low-capacity drive such as a 150 GB hard disk, especially if you have Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re running short of disk space, you can analyze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/easily-track-disk-space-usage-using-windirstat\/\">disk usage<\/a> by files and programs, clear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/delete-windows-old-folder-previous-versions\/\">previous Windows installation<\/a> files, and wipe out temporary &amp; junk files using Disk Cleanup or CCleaner.\u00a0In addition, you can lower the disk space allotted to System Restore to free up disk space in any version of Windows.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Increase or Decrease the Disk Space Used by System Restore<\/h2>\n<p>To alter the disk space allocation for System Restore, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Using System Restore Properties<\/h3>\n<p>Using the Run dialog, launch <code>SystemPropertiesProtection.exe<\/code> to open the System Restore dialog. Alternately, run <code>sysdm.cpl<\/code> and select the System Protection tab.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9101\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/system-restore-space-allot-1.png\" alt=\"what is system volume information folder, and can i delete it\" width=\"412\" height=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the drive for which you want to reduce the disk space allotment. Click <strong>Configure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/system-restore-space-allot-2.png\" alt=\"what is system volume information folder, and can i delete it\" width=\"407\" height=\"466\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This tab shows the current disk usage by System Restore in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/what-is-system-volume-information-can-i-delete\/\">System Volume Information<\/a> folder.<\/p>\n<p>Move the Disk Space Usage slider as required, and click <b>OK<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Or, to reduce the disk space slider in a granular fashion, click exactly on the pointer in the slider to select it. And use the left or right arrows on your keyboard. Each tap of the left or right arrow decreases or increases the disk usage slider by 1%.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you reduce the slider to the left, the disk space allocation to the System Restore feature is lowered, which in turn keeps the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/what-is-system-volume-information-can-i-delete\/\">System Volume Information<\/a> folder size low. The oldest restore points are purged automatically (FIFO)\u00a0so that the System Restore doesn\u2019t use more space than what you allocated.<\/p>\n<p><em>You also have the option to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-delete-system-restore-points-windows\/\">delete all the restore points<\/a> for the drive. Press the Delete button if the system has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/disk-cleanup-checkbox-options-default-enabled\/\">very low disk space<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><em>If your anti-virus software warns of a virus in the System Volume Information folder, you may need to disable system protection and click Apply in the above dialog. This erases all your restore points. You can turn it back again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And, you may be knowing that you can use Disk Cleanup to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-delete-system-restore-points-windows\/\">clear all but the latest<\/a> Restore Point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/selectively-delete-system-restore-points\/\">How to Delete Individual System Restore Points in Windows?<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a name=\"vssadmin\"><\/a>Method 2: Using Vssadmin command-line tool<\/h3>\n<h4>View disk space used by System Restore<\/h4>\n<p>As System Restore is based on Shadow Copy, and thus it gets the allocated disk space information from the Volume Shadow Copy service. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/recover-files-previous-versions-shadow-copy-windows-7-vista\/\">previous versions<\/a> feature uses Shadow Copy as well.) To view or adjust the disk space allotted to System Restore, you can use the Vssadmin.exe built-in command-line tool.<\/p>\n<p>To view the used space and maximum allotted space for System Restore, open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">elevated Command Prompt<\/a>, and type the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>vssadmin list shadowstorage<\/pre>\n<p>It shows the allocated space for Shadow Copy for each drive in the system.<\/p>\n<pre>vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool\r\n(C) Copyright 2001-2013 Microsoft Corp.\r\n\r\nShadow Copy Storage association\r\n   For volume: (E:)\\\\?\\Volume{e9b9bd9d-0000-0000-0000-100000000000}\\\r\n   Shadow Copy Storage volume: (E:)\\\\?\\Volume{e9b9bd9d-0000-0000-0000-100000000000}\\\r\n   Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.46 GB (0%)\r\n   Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.91 GB (0%)\r\n   Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 46.6 GB (5%)\r\n\r\nShadow Copy Storage association\r\n   For volume: (C:)\\\\?\\Volume{098cc206-0000-0000-0000-500600000000}\\\r\n   Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\\\?\\Volume{098cc206-0000-0000-0000-500600000000}\\\r\n   Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 bytes (0%)\r\n   Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 bytes (0%)\r\n   Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 3.89 GB (2%)<\/pre>\n<p>If you use a regular Command Prompt to run vssadmin.exe, you&#8217;ll see the following error message:<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Error: You don&#8217;t have the correct permissions to run this command. Please run this utility from a command window that has elevated administrator privileges.<\/div>\n<h4>Reducing the disk space allocation for System Restore<\/h4>\n<p>To reduce the disk space used by System Restore and Shadow Copy using Vssadmin, use the following command-line syntax:<\/p>\n<pre>vssadmin resize shadowstorage \/on=[drive]: \/for=[drive]: \/maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec]<\/pre>\n<p><em>MaxSizeSpec must be 300MB or greater and accepts the following suffixes: KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, and EB. If a suffix is not supplied, MaxSizeSpec is in bytes. If MaxSizeSpec is not specified, then there will be no limit to the amount of space it may use.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To allot Shadow Copy 2 GB of space for shadow copy on C: drive, use this command:<\/p>\n<pre>vssadmin resize shadowstorage \/for=c: \/on=c: \/maxsize=2GB<\/pre>\n<p>To allot Shadow Copy 700MB, use this command:<\/p>\n<pre>vssadmin resize shadowstorage \/for=c: \/on=c: \/maxsize=700MB<\/pre>\n<p>After running the command, you should see the message <i><b>Successfully resized the shadow copy storage association<\/b><\/i> in the Command Prompt. You can verify the allotted space by running the <em>vssadmin list shadowstorage<\/em> command.<\/p>\n<p><em><b>Important:<\/b> Resizing the storage association may cause shadow copies to disappear. The System Restore window may report &#8220;<strong>No restore points have been created on your computer&#8217;s system drive.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9759\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/system-restore-no-restore-points.png\" alt=\"reduce disk space for system restore\" width=\"561\" height=\"138\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Also, setting the MaxSizeSpec value less than 300 MB will wipe out all the shadow copies, and thus clears out all the System Restore points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hope you were able to free up disk space by lowering\/reallocating the disk space for System Restore and shadow copy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>System Restore uses a considerable amount of disk space on the computer.
