This post explains how to change the default option in the classic Shutdown Dialog (the Alt + F4 dialog) as well as the Start menu Power button action.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-81001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/classic-shutdown-dialog.png\" alt=\"classic shutdown dialog - Alt + F4\" width=\"536\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Change the Default Option in the Shut Down Windows dialog<\/h2>\n<h3>Instructions for Windows 10 or 11 Pro and higher<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)<\/li>\n<li>Expand the following section:\n<pre>User Configuration \u2192 Administrative Templates \u2192 Start Menu and Taskbar\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;Change Start Menu power button policy&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Set the policy to &#8220;Enabled&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Choose one of the following actions:\n<pre>Shut Down\r\nSleep\r\nLog off\r\nLock\r\nRestart\r\nSwitch user\r\nHibernate\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click OK and restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>More information about the above GPO<\/h4>\n<p>It sets the default action of the power button on the Start menu and the classic Shutdown dialog.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you enable this setting, the Start Menu will set the power button to the chosen action, and not let the user change this action.<\/li>\n<li>If you set the button to either Sleep or Hibernate, and that state is not supported on a computer, then the button will fall back to Shut Down.<\/li>\n<li>If you disable or do not configure this setting, the Start Menu power button will be set to Shut Down by default, and the user can change this setting to another action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Instructions for Windows 10 or 11 Home Edition<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following registry key.
