{"id":80915,"date":"2026-06-11T13:14:46","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T07:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/?p=80915"},"modified":"2026-06-11T13:31:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T08:01:39","slug":"capability-access-manager-db-huge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/capability-access-manager-db-huge\/","title":{"rendered":"[Fix] Capability Access Manager.db-Wal Huge File Size"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many users have reported that the Capability Access Manager service in Windows 11 continuously writes to CapabilityAccessManager.db and CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal, and that the file sizes are very large. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Capability Access Manager Service (camsvc) provides facilities for managing UWP apps&#8217; access to app capabilities and for checking an app&#8217;s access to specific capabilities. The database may contain the location and usage history. It tracks the last time each application accessed or requested access to a user&#8217;s camera, microphone, or location, as well as other information.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a TreeSize screenshot from a user who encountered this issue. Capability Access Manager databases occupy 97 GB on the system. In some cases, the db-wal file size may exceed 300 GB.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80916\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/capabilityaccessmanager.png\" alt=\"capabilityaccessmanager file size huge\" width=\"752\" height=\"517\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Third-party apps, such as Rainmeter and Dell SmartByte, may repeatedly write to the Capability Access Manager Service database, thereby inflating the file size. Likewise, other apps may cause the issue.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Reference:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.rainmeter.net\/viewtopic.php?t=45197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Bug] Rainmeter&#8217;s WiFiStatus queries cause huge 30GB+ CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file &#8211; Rainmeter Forums<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Clear the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file<\/h3>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/warning.png\" alt=\"warning caution icon\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18386\" \/><strong>Important:<\/strong> A few users have mentioned that after following the procedure below, the Settings page crashed when opening Settings > System > Power, and Wi-Fi stopped working. They had to repair install Windows 11 using the ISO. So, please take a system image backup using Macrium Reflect, Hasleo, or a similar app before proceeding further.\n<\/div>\n<p>Start Windows in Safe mode. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/start-windows-11-or-10-safe-mode\/\">How to Start Windows 10 or 11 in Safe Mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Safe mode, open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Command Prompt (admin)<\/a> and run the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">net stop camsvc\r\n\r\ntakeown \/f \"C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CapabilityAccessManager\\CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal\" \/a\r\n\r\nicacls \"C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CapabilityAccessManager\\CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal\" \/grant administrators:F\r\n\r\ndel \/a \"C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CapabilityAccessManager\\CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal\"\r\n\r\nexit\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>That should delete the db-wal file and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/free-up-hard-disk-space-windows\/\">free up the disk space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If the database continues to grow rapidly, please follow the steps below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Turn off Location Services<\/h3>\n<p>Open Settings \u2192 Privacy &amp; security \u2192 Location. Turn off <strong>Location services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(This also turns off the options\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">&#8220;Let desktop apps access your location&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">&#8220;Let desktop apps access your location&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">.<\/span>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After doing that, the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file should stop growing rapidly. If the problem persists, follow Step 3 below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 3: Identify the offending process<\/h3>\n<p>Uninstall Rainmeter and Dell SmartByte if you have them installed. If you don&#8217;t have those apps and yet the problem occurs, perform a clean boot of Windows using msconfig.exe. A clean boot is the process of starting Windows without loading any third-party applications or services.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Launch `msconfig.exe` and select the `Services` tab.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the `Hide all Microsoft services` checkbox. This is an <strong>important<\/strong> step. Now, the list will contain only 3rd-party services.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Disable all<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click on the Startup tab. Step 3 in that article is crucial.
