Deleting the file causes the error &#8220;The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80754\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/strange-file-d-explorer.png\" alt=\"strange file D in windows folder\" width=\"749\" height=\"71\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/strange-file-d-wiztree.png\" alt=\"strange file D in windows folder\" width=\"750\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The strange file &#8220;D&#8221; is most likely the page file. This issue occurs when BitLocker Drive Encryption (BDE) is enabled on the OS volume and you&#8217;ve configured the page file on the D: drive.<\/p>\n<p>Since BDE forces the pagefile on the OS volume, the unknown file named\u00a0<strong>D<\/strong>\u00a0(that represents the\u00a0<strong>D:<\/strong> drive) or any other drive letter seems to be created in the Windows folder.\u00a0As a workaround, setting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-created-temporary-paging-file\/\">PagefileOnOsVolume<\/a> registry value to <strong>0<\/strong> (or) moving the page file to the C: drive should prevent this issue.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>Resetting the page file configuration to defaults should resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Run <strong>systempropertiesadvanced.exe<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Under Settings, click Performance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Select the Advanced tab, and click Change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Uncheck the <strong>Automatically manage paging file size for all drives<\/strong> option.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Select the D: drive and select &#8220;No paging file&#8221;, and click Set.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Select the C: drive and select &#8220;System managed size&#8221;, and click Set.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pagefile-settings-3.png\" alt=\"pagefile settings in windows\" width=\"396\" height=\"523\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Click OK and restart Windows when prompted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>After rebooting Windows, re-enable the <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"><strong>Automatically manage paging file size for all drives<\/strong> checkbox.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pagefile-settings-2.png\" alt=\"pagefile settings in windows\" width=\"396\" height=\"523\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The above steps move the paging file from the D drive to the C drive.\u00a0That should resolve the issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you open the Windows directory, an unknown 10 GB file named &#8220;D&#8221; with the system and hidden attributes appears.
