Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/task_scheduler_service_error.png\" alt=\"cannot start task scheduler - started and stopped\" width=\"412\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you launch the Task Scheduler MMC console (taskschd.msc), the following error occurs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The remote computer was not found.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/task_scheduler_launch_error.png\" alt=\"task scheduler - remote computer was not found\" width=\"239\" height=\"133\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And none of the tasks are shown in the Task Scheduler MMC console. Instead, the error &#8220;Reading Data Failed&#8221; is displayed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/task_scheduler_launch_empty.png\" alt=\"task scheduler empty\" width=\"750\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you run the SchTasks.exe console tool to query the scheduled tasks registered on the computer, the following error occurs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">ERROR: The network address is invalid.\r\n<\/pre>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The Task Scheduler service may fail to start if the Time Broker service is turned off. However, Time Broker is not listed in the Task Scheduler service dependencies.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>Please open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and go to the following location:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\TimeBrokerSvc\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>In the right pane, double-click the value named <strong>Start<\/strong> and set its data to &#8220;<strong>3<\/strong>&#8220;. The value data &#8220;<strong>3<\/strong>&#8221; implies Manual start.<\/p>\n<p>Exit the Registry Editor and restart Windows.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">After restarting Windows, check the status of the two services. To do so, open an admin Command Prompt window and run the following commands to check the status of the Time Broker and Task Scheduler services:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">net start TimeBrokerSvc\r\n\r\nnet start Schedule\r\n\r\nsc.exe query TimeBrokerSvc\r\n\r\nsc.exe query Schedule\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>That should fix the issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Task Scheduler service may fail to start, and the following error may occur when you try to start it manually using the Services MMC in Windows 10 or 11.
