If this service is stopped, diagnostics will no longer function.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>The Diagnostic Policy Service error code 5 occurs due to incorrect registry permissions. Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor by running <strong>regedit.exe<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch in the Registry Editor:\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\WDI\\Config<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <strong>Config<\/strong> and click <strong>Permissions&#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Advanced<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Select a principal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the Object name text box, type <strong>NT SERVICE\\DPS<\/strong>, and click OK.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/dps-service-error-5-permissions-3.png\" alt=\"Diagnostic Policy Service error 5 - access is denied - fix permissions\" width=\"457\" height=\"251\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Show advanced permissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the following checkboxes:\n<ul>\n<li>Query Value<\/li>\n<li>Set Value<\/li>\n<li>Create Subkey<\/li>\n<li>Enumerate subkeys<\/li>\n<li>Notify<\/li>\n<li>Read Control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/dps-service-error-5-permissions.png\" alt=\"Diagnostic Policy Service error 5 - access is denied - fix permissions\" width=\"749\" height=\"587\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK.<\/li>\n<li>The DPS account should now have write access (special permissions) for the <strong>Config<\/strong> registry key.
