When you start the Diagnostic Policy Service in your Windows 10 or 11 system, the following error may occur:<\/p>\n

Windows could not start the Diagnostic Policy Service service on Local Computer:\r\n\r\nError 5: Access is denied.\r\n<\/pre>\n

When this occurs, the following entry is logged into the System event log.<\/p>\n
Log Name:      System\r\nSource:        Service Control Manager\r\nDate:          \r\nEvent ID:      7023\r\nTask Category: None\r\nLevel:         Error\r\nKeywords:      Classic\r\nUser:          N\/A\r\nComputer:      \r\nDescription:\r\nThe Diagnostic Policy Service service terminated with the following error: \r\nAccess is denied.\r\n<\/pre>\n
The Diagnostic Policy Service enables problem detection, troubleshooting, and resolution for Windows components. If this service is stopped, diagnostics will no longer function.<\/p>\n
Resolution<\/h2>\n
The Diagnostic Policy Service error code 5 occurs due to incorrect registry permissions. Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue:<\/p>\n
    \n
  1. Start the Registry Editor by running regedit.exe<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Go to the following branch in the Registry Editor:\n
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\WDI\\Config<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
  3. Right-click Config<\/strong> and click Permissions…<\/strong><\/li>\n
  4. Click Advanced<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  5. Click Add<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  6. Click Select a principal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  7. In the Object name text box, type NT SERVICE\\DPS<\/strong>, and click OK.
    \n\"Diagnostic<\/li>\n
  8. Click Show advanced permissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  9. Enable the following checkboxes:\n
      \n
    • Query Value<\/li>\n
    • Set Value<\/li>\n
    • Create Subkey<\/li>\n
    • Enumerate subkeys<\/li>\n
    • Notify<\/li>\n
    • Read Control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \"Diagnostic<\/li>\n
    • Click OK.<\/li>\n
    • The DPS account should now have write access (special permissions) for the Config<\/strong> registry key. Click OK<\/strong>, OK<\/strong> to apply the changes and close all the dialogs.

    • Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
