By default, the Windows setup creates a 100 MB EFI partition, which may be insufficient sometimes. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_1.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"754\" height=\"597\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OEMs dump the BIOS update images into the EFI partition, thus consuming the entire space in that volume. If the EFI partition is full, Windows updates will roll back with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/we-couldnt-update-system-reserved-partition-error-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">error code 0x800F0922<\/a>, and Feature updates will fail with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/0xc1900201-windows-feature-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">error code 0xc1900201<\/a> or the error message &#8220;Failed to upgrade the system reserve partition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in the above articles, you can delete the font files (.ttf) and BIOS update images from the EFI partition whenever it becomes full. However, that&#8217;s only a workaround. A permanent fix is to resize the EFI partition to 200 MB or more. The built-in Disk Management console doesn&#8217;t help because it doesn&#8217;t let you extend a partition if the free space is not adjacent to that partition.<\/p>\n<p>AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard (free) can resize the EFI partition easily.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/warning.png\" alt=\"warning caution icon\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18386\" \/><strong>Important:<\/strong> Before proceeding, please <strong>backup<\/strong> your data to an external drive. Although the following procedure shouldn&#8217;t erase your data, it&#8217;s highly advisable to backup the disk before modifying its layout.\n<\/div>\n<h2>Resize the EFI System Partition<\/h2>\n<p>(This article assumes that your OS disk has the default UEFI layout &#8212; i.e., EFI, MSR, OS partition, and the Recovery partition)<\/p>\n<p>Please follow these steps to extend the EFI partition.<\/p>\n<p>Download AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard and install it.<\/p>\n<pre>https:\/\/www.aomeitech.com\/pa\/standard.html<\/pre>\n<p>Select the C drive, and click &#8220;Resize\/Move Partition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_2.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"1025\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_2.png 1025w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_2-768x539.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1025px) 100vw, 1025px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;Move and Resize Partition&#8221; dialog, enable &#8220;<strong>I need to move this partition<\/strong>&#8220;. You should now see the drag handles on both sides of the partition.<\/p>\n<p>Also, click the right arrows next to the &#8220;Partition size&#8221; text box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78027\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_3.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"800\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_3.png 800w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_3-768x499.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Configure the options as below &#8212; i.e., approximately <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">150 MB<\/span> of <strong>unallocated space <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before<\/span><\/strong> the partition, and click OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_4.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"800\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_4.png 800w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_4-768x499.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve created an unallocated space before the C drive (i.e., after the Microsoft Reserved partition.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_5.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"1024\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_5.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_5-768x546.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should now move the Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition to the right of the unallocated space.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, select the 16 MB MSR partition and click &#8220;Resize\/Move Partition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_6.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"1024\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_6.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_6-768x546.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;Move Partition&#8221; dialog, select the MSR partition and drag it to the extreme right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78031\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_7.png\" alt=\"resize efi partition using aomei free version\" width=\"800\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_7.png 800w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/resize_efi_7-768x499.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It should look like the following screenshot. This extends the EFI partition, wholly occupying the unallocated space next to the partition.
