Until then, you can defer the latest feature update (24H2) if you don\u2019t need it now.<\/p>\n<p>To block the 24H2 update, you can use the &#8220;ProductVersion&#8221;, &#8220;TargetReleaseVersion&#8221;, and &#8220;TargetReleaseVersionInfo&#8221; registry values or the equivalent Group Policy setting.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>How to Block the Windows 11 24H2 Update<\/h2>\n<p>To prevent the automatic upgrade to Windows 11, please use one of the methods below:<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Using InControl from GRC.com<\/h3>\n<p>The easiest way to apply those registry settings is to use the free InControl app from GRC.com.<\/p>\n<p>Download GRC | InControl from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.com\/incontrol.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.grc.com\/incontrol.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Run the utility. It shows the existing Windows version.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/block-windows-11-upgrade-inctrl-1.png\" alt=\"block windows 11 24h2 feature update - incontrol\" width=\"464\" height=\"359\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78504\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To remain on the existing Windows version, all you need to do is click &#8220;<strong>Take Control<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The screen now looks like the following:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/block-windows-11-upgrade-inctrl-2.png\" alt=\"block windows 11 24h2 feature update - incontrol\" width=\"464\" height=\"359\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78503\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Your system will now remain in the build mentioned in the screenshot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"Tip icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-78501\" \/>The GRC InControl tool need not be running. After applying the settings, you can even delete the app.  Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.com\/incontrol\/details.htm\" target=\"_blank\">grc.com\/incontrol\/details.htm<\/a> to know the settings it modifies.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/feature-update-not-offered-wu\/\">Why didn\u2019t I get the Windows 11 24H2 update?<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 2: Using the Registry Editor<\/h3>\n<p>To apply the settings manually, you can use the Registry Editor.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch <strong>regedit.exe<\/strong> and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate<\/pre>\n<p>Note: If the branch doesn&#8217;t exist by default, create it manually.<\/li>\n<li>Create the following keys manually and assign the appropriate data:<br \/>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Value name<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Value type<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Value data<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>DisableOSUpgrade<\/td>\n<td>REG_DWORD<\/td>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>ProductVersion<\/td>\n<td>REG_SZ<\/td>\n<td>Windows 10<br \/>\nor<br \/>\nWindows 11<br \/>\n(Type the OS you want to remain on.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>TargetReleaseVersion<\/td>\n<td>REG_DWORD<\/td>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>TargetReleaseVersionInfo<\/td>\n<td>REG_SZ<\/td>\n<td>22H2<br \/>\nor<br \/>\n23H2<br \/>\n(Type the version you want to remain on.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div class=\"qt\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you&#8217;re using an older version of Windows 11 (e.g., 21H2) and want to upgrade to the target version (e.g., 23H2), do not create the <strong>DisableOSUpgrade<\/strong> registry value.)<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/block-windows-11-upgrade-registry-1.png\" alt=\"block windows 11 24h2 feature update - registry editor\" width=\"649\" height=\"226\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78505\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the above example, I entered <strong>Windows 10<\/strong> and <strong>22H2<\/strong> (i.e., my current OS version) for <strong>ProductVersion<\/strong> and <strong>TargetReleaseVersionInfo<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><em>(If you&#8217;re using Windows 11 23H2, type <strong>Windows 11<\/strong> and <strong>23H2<\/strong> in the respective fields.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Windows Update should no longer offer the latest Feature update.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Option 3: Using REG commands<\/h3>\n<p>You can use the REG.exe commands to apply the registry settings.<\/p>\n<h4>If you&#8217;re running Windows 10 22H2:<\/h4>\n<p>Run these commands from <strong>admin<\/strong> Command Prompt:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v DisableOSUpgrade \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v ProductVersion \/t REG_SZ \/d \"Windows 10\" \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersion \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersionInfo \/t REG_SZ \/d \"22H2\" \/f<\/pre>\n<h4>If you&#8217;re running Windows 11 23H2:<\/h4>\n<p>Run these commands from <strong>admin<\/strong> Command Prompt:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v DisableOSUpgrade \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v ProductVersion \/t REG_SZ \/d \"Windows 11\" \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersion \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersionInfo \/t REG_SZ \/d \"23H2\" \/f<\/pre>\n<p>Restart Windows.<\/p>\n<p>The 24H2 update should not be offered via Windows Update.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3>Note<\/h3>\n<p>After applying the above settings, the Windows Update page may say &#8220;Some settings are managed by your organization&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/block-windows-11-upgrade-policies-notification-1.png\" alt=\"block windows 11 24h2 feature update - registry policies\" width=\"701\" height=\"513\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-78506\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;ll see the &#8220;View configured update policies&#8221; link. Clicking on the link shows that the following Windows Update policies have been applied.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Target release version for feature updates<\/li>\n<li>Target product version for feature updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, the &#8220;Get the latest updates as soon as they&#8217;re available&#8221; option will be unchecked and grayed out after applying the above settings. For more information about that settings, see Microsoft article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/get-windows-updates-as-soon-as-they-re-available-for-your-device-cad7b32b-001e-435b-9110-f18309b54168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get Windows updates as soon as they&#8217;re available for your device<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h3>Undo information<\/h3>\n<p>When your current OS version reaches the end of servicing, reopen the GRC InControl tool and click &#8220;Release Control&#8221;. Anyway, the above setting may not be honored if your current OS version has reached the end of servicing. In that case, the latest feature update will be offered via Windows Update.<\/p>\n<p>End of cycle announcements &#8211; Reference: <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/windows11-release-information\">Windows 11 &#8211; release information | Microsoft Learn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(or)<\/p>\n<p>When your system is ready for 24H2, reverse the above settings using the following commands.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">\r\nreg delete \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v DisableOSUpgrade \/f\r\n\r\nreg delete \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v ProductVersion \/f\r\n\r\nreg delete \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersion \/f\r\n\r\nreg delete \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersionInfo \/f\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Restart Windows. The 24H2 update should now be offered via Windows Update if your system is ready.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Additional Information<\/h3>\n<p>You can also accomplish the above using the Group Policy Editor (Pro and higher). The settings can be configured in the following branch in the Local Group Policy Editor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Windows 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>Computer Configuration \u2192 Administrative Templates \u2192 Windows Components \u2192 Windows Update \u2192 Windows Update for Business<\/pre>\n<p>Double-click the &#8220;<b>Select the target Feature Update version<\/b>&#8221; and configure accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Windows 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>Computer Configuration \u2192 Administrative Templates \u2192 Windows Components \u2192 Windows Update \u2192 Manage updates offered from Windows Update<\/pre>\n<p>Double-click the &#8220;<b>Select the target Feature Update version<\/b>&#8221; and configure accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Windows 10 22H2 will be supported till October 2025, and Windows 11 23H2 till November 2025.
