If you\u2019re using Windows 10 or an earlier version of Windows 11, such as 23H2, you can block the Windows 11 24H2 Feature update from being offered or installed automatically via Windows Update.<\/p>\n

Windows 10 22H2 is supported till October 2025, and Windows 11 23H2 till November 2025. Until then, you can defer the latest feature update (24H2) if you don\u2019t need it now.<\/p>\n

To block the 24H2 update, you can use the “ProductVersion”, “TargetReleaseVersion”, and “TargetReleaseVersionInfo” registry values or the equivalent Group Policy setting.<\/p>\n

How to Block the Windows 11 24H2 Update<\/h2>\n

To prevent the automatic upgrade to Windows 11, please use one of the methods below:<\/p>\n

Option 1: Using InControl from GRC.com<\/h3>\n

The easiest way to apply those registry settings is to use the free InControl app from GRC.com.<\/p>\n

Download GRC | InControl from https:\/\/www.grc.com\/incontrol.htm<\/a><\/p>\n

Run the utility. It shows the existing Windows version.<\/p>\n

To remain on the existing Windows version, all you need to do is click “Take Control<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

The screen now looks like the following:<\/p>\n

Your system will now remain in the build mentioned in the screenshot.<\/p>\n

Option 2: Using the Registry Editor<\/h3>\n

To apply the settings manually, you can use the Registry Editor.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Launch regedit.exe<\/strong> and go to:\n
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate<\/pre>\n
    Note: If the branch doesn’t exist by default, create it manually.<\/li>\n
  2. Create the following keys manually and assign the appropriate data:

    Value name<\/strong><\/td>\nValue type<\/strong><\/td>\nValue data<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    \nWindows 11
    \n(Type the OS you want to remain on.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    TargetReleaseVersionInfo<\/td>\nREG_SZ<\/td>\n22H2

    \n23H2
    \n(Type the version you want to remain on.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
    Note:<\/strong> If you’re using an older version of Windows 11 (e.g., 21H2) and want to upgrade to the target version (e.g., 23H2), do not create the DisableOSUpgrade<\/strong> registry value.)<\/div>\n

    In the above example, I entered Windows 10<\/strong> and 22H2<\/strong> (i.e., my current OS version) for ProductVersion<\/strong> and TargetReleaseVersionInfo<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n
    (If you’re using Windows 11 23H2, type Windows 11<\/strong> and 23H2<\/strong> in the respective fields.)<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n
  4. Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Windows Update should no longer offer the latest Feature update.<\/p>\n

    Option 3: Using REG commands<\/h3>\n
    You can use the REG.exe commands to apply the registry settings.<\/p>\n
    If you’re running Windows 10 22H2:<\/h4>\n
    Run these commands from admin<\/strong> Command Prompt:<\/p>\n
    \r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v DisableOSUpgrade \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v ProductVersion \/t REG_SZ \/d \"Windows 10\" \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersion \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\" \/v TargetReleaseVersionInfo \/t REG_SZ \/d \"22H2\" \/f<\/pre>\n
    If you’re running Windows 11 23H2:<\/h4>\n
    Run these commands from admin<\/strong> Command Prompt:<\/p>\n

    Restart Windows.<\/p>\n
    The 24H2 update should not be offered via Windows Update.<\/p>\n

    Note<\/h3>\n
    After applying the above settings, the Windows Update page may say “Some settings are managed by your organization”.<\/p>\n

    And you’ll see the “View configured update policies” link. Clicking on the link shows that the following Windows Update policies have been applied.<\/p>\n
