{"id":76737,"date":"2024-10-13T15:39:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-13T10:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=76737"},"modified":"2024-10-13T15:39:17","modified_gmt":"2024-10-13T10:09:17","slug":"windows-update-service-keeps-disabled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-update-service-keeps-disabled\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix: Windows Update service keeps getting disabled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you enable and start the Windows Update and BITS services, they may get disabled automatically after a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p>A background service may be disabling Windows Update and related services, such as BITS, Delivery Optimization, WaasMedicSvc, etc.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To verify if a third-party service is turning off the Windows Update and BITS services, disable all <strong>non-Microsoft services<\/strong> using the System Configuration tool and restart Windows.<\/p>\n<h3>Turn off third-party services<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch <strong>msconfig.exe<\/strong>, and select the \u201cServices\u201d tab.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Enable \u201cHide all Microsoft services\u201d. The list will now show only the third-party services. This is an <strong>important<\/strong> step.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31497\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/msconfig-disable-non-microsoft-services.png\" alt=\"disable non microsoft services in msconfig\" width=\"560\" height=\"354\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Click <strong>Disable all<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Reboot the computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Launch the Services MMC, and re-enable Windows Update (set it to \u201cManual\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After a restart, see if the Windows Update startup type is intact (\u201cManual\u201d). If so, the next part is to re-enable a set of services at a time and reboot to find the offending service.<\/p>\n<h4>So, which service is the culprit?<\/h4>\n<p>Bisect the list and re-enable the first half. Reboot. If the Windows Update service is disabled, set it to <strong>Manual<\/strong>. Then, narrow down the service that has caused the problem from the first half of the services. Repeat these steps until you\u2019ve isolated the issue to a single service.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you may have a program like \u201c<strong>StopUpdates10<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>NoVirusThanks Win Update Stop<\/strong>\u201d installed. These programs disable the Windows Update services at specific intervals. In this case, the name of the service is \u201c<strong>StopUpdates10 Guard<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/stopupdates10-guard-service.png\" alt=\"stopupdates10 guard service\" width=\"659\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Uninstalling the program should let you install updates via Windows Update.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to \u201cStopUpdates10\u201d, the \u201cNoVirusThanks Win Update Stop\u201d program runs as a service. The details are below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">Service Name: <strong>WinUpdStopSvc<\/strong><br \/>\nService Caption: NoVirusThanks WinUpdStopSvc<br \/>\nService Image File: c:\\program files\\novirusthanks\\win update stop\\winupdstopsvc.exe<\/div>\n<p>Uninstalling these programs should do the trick!<\/p>\n<p><em>Also, don&#8217;t rule out malware.
