Please run Setup elevated or with a different user that has the required permissions.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76353\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/windows-setup-user-require-permissions.png\" alt=\"Windows setup error: permissions required \" width=\"406\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, creating a new local administrator account and running the setup may not help.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The built-in Administrators group (SID: S-1-5-32-544) must have the <strong>SeSecurityPrivilege<\/strong> privilege. Otherwise, the above error occurs when you run Windows 10 or 11 Setup from the ISO or USB. The privilege corresponds to the &#8220;Manage auditing and security log&#8221; setting in the Local Security Policy Editor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\nYou can view the security policies on your computer by opening a admin Command Prompt and running the command <code>secedit \/export \/cfg c:\\secpol.txt<\/code>. Then, inspect <code>c:\\secpol.txt<\/code> or compare it with another Windows 10\/11 computer to see which settings are incorrect. You may also run <code>whoami \/priv<\/code> to check the privileges for the current user account.\n<\/div>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the setup error, fix the security privileges using the Local Security Policy Editor in Windows 10\/11 Pro or higher.<\/p>\n<p>Launch <strong>secpol.msc<\/strong> and go to:<\/p>\n<pre>Security Settings \u2192 Local Policies \u2192 User Rights Assignment.<\/pre>\n<p>Double-click &#8220;Manage auditing and security log&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><em>(It may show up empty, which causes the error when launching Windows setup.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Add User or Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-1.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"417\" height=\"507\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select <strong>Object Types<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76351\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-2.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"458\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enable the <strong>Groups<\/strong> checkbox, and click OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-3.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"499\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type <strong>administrators<\/strong> and click <strong>Check Names<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-4.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"458\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It will resolve automatically to the [computername\\group name] format.<\/p>\n<p>Click OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-5.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"458\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-6.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"417\" height=\"507\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Administrators&#8221; group has now been added to the &#8220;Manage auditing and security log&#8221; option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manage-auditing-policy-7.png\" alt=\"manage auditing and security log - administrators add\" width=\"750\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Close the Local Security Policy editor and <strong>restart<\/strong> Windows.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/restart-windows-11.png\" alt=\"restart windows 10 via win + x menu\" width=\"481\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should be able to run Windows Setup now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52811\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/setup_stuck_updates_check_1.png\" alt=\"windows 11 setup initial screen\" width=\"702\" height=\"555\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you run the Windows 10 or 11 Setup (setup.exe) from the ISO or USB setup disk, the following error may appear: This user does not have the required permissions to run Setup.
