After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/you-cannot-shrink-volume-beyond-point-disk-mgmt\/\">turning off the paging file<\/a> (&#8220;pagefile.sys&#8221;) on the OS partition and enabling it on another drive or partition, Windows keeps creating a temporary paging file on the OS partition.<\/p>\n<p>The following notification appears at startup.<!--more--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76105\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/temp-pagefile-on-os-volume.png\" alt=\"disable pagefile.sys on os volume\" width=\"406\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>Windows may keep creating a temporary paging file on the OS volume because of the <strong>PagefileOnOsVolume<\/strong> registry setting.<\/p>\n<p>When BitLocker is enabled on the computer, it creates the &#8220;PagefileOnOsVolume&#8221; registry value and sets its data to &#8220;1&#8221;. This forces Windows to create <em>pagefile.sys<\/em> on the OS partition, ignoring your custom settings in the &#8220;Performance Options&#8221; dialog.<\/p>\n<p>BitLocker enables the registry setting to help protect confidential data in a page file.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> See &#8220;Disable the Paging file&#8221; in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/you-cannot-shrink-volume-beyond-point-disk-mgmt\/\">&#8220;Cannot shrink a volume beyond the point&#8221; when Resizing a Partition<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To stop Windows from creating the paging file in the OS partition on BitLocker-enabled systems, please use the registry edit below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch Regedit.exe and go to the following key:\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Session Manager\\Memory Management<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>PagefileOnOsVolume<\/strong> and set it to <strong>0<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76106\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/pagefileonosvolume-registry.png\" alt=\"disable pagefile.sys on os volume\" width=\"743\" height=\"274\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.\n<div class=\"qt\">If necessary, configure the paging file settings again. To do so, launch the file <strong>SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe<\/strong>, click &#8220;Settings&#8221; under Performance, click &#8220;Advanced&#8217;, and click &#8220;Change&#8221;.
