This article assumes the computer has Windows RE enabled.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Using the System image backup tool<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch Control Panel and open the &#8220;Backup and Restore (Windows 7)&#8221; applet.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Create a system image&#8221; and select the external drive from the list.<\/li>\n<li>On the next screen, you&#8217;ll see the list of drives, their total capacity, and the used space. This dialog precisely displays the used space for all the volumes, including the EFI and the Recovery partitions.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/recovery-partition-free-space-1.png\" alt=\"find recovery partition size and free disk space\" width=\"751\" height=\"567\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click Cancel, Cancel, and close the Control Panel.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 2: Using the File System Utility (fsutil.exe)<\/h3>\n<p>Open a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Command Prompt (Admin)<\/a> window and type:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">reagentc \/info<\/pre>\n<p>In the output, note the Windows RE location. It might look something like below:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>\\\\?\\GLOBALROOT\\device\\harddisk0\\partition5\\Recovery\\WindowsRE<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Now, type:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">fsutil volume diskfree \\\\?\\GLOBALROOT\\device\\harddisk0\\partition5<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/recovery-partition-free-space-fsutil.png\" alt=\"find recovery partition size and free disk space\" width=\"752\" height=\"461\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The output shows the &#8220;<strong>Total free bytes,&#8221; &#8220;Total bytes,&#8221; and &#8220;Total quota free bytes.&#8221;<\/strong> In the above example, the free disk space in the WinRE partition is <strong>254.1 MB<\/strong>. The partition&#8217;s total size is <strong>749 MB<\/strong>. That means the Winre.wim image and the configuration files occupy <strong>494.9 MB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Note<\/h4>\n<p>Alternatively, you can use the following methods. These methods can be beneficial when WinRE is disabled, but the <code>winre.wim<\/code> image stays in the Recovery partition itself instead of moving to the staging area &#8212; i.e., C:\\Windows\\System32\\Recovery.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can also find the disk # and partition # using Disk Management.
