When you open Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 “Advanced app settings” in Windows 11 or Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Apps & Features in Windows 10, the “Choose where to get apps from<\/strong>” option may be missing.

You may be unable to install apps outside of Microsoft Store. Doing so results in the message, “The app you’re trying to install isn’t a Microsoft-verified app.”<\/p>\n

Cause<\/h2>\n

The “Choose where to get apps from” option will be unavailable if your Windows installation is in S Mode. You can check that by opening the Settings App, clicking System, and selecting “Activation.”<\/p>\n

If it’s in S mode, it says “Windows 11 Home in S mode.”<\/p>\n

S mode is designed for security and performance, exclusively running apps from the Microsoft Store.<\/p>\n

Resolution<\/h2>\n

You need to exit S mode to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store. Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won’t be able to go back to Windows 10 in S mode. There’s no charge to switch out of S mode.<\/p>\n

    Alternatively, you can run ms-windows-store:\/\/pdp\/?productid=BF712690PMLF<\/strong> from the Run dialog to open the Store app to that page.\n<\/li>\n

  2. On the\u00a0Switch out of S mode <\/b>page, select the\u00a0Get<\/b>\u00a0button. After you see a confirmation message on the page,\u00a0you’ll\u00a0be able to\u00a0install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
