The entire error message verbatim is given below:<!--more--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool \nVersion: 10.0.22621.2792 \n\nImage Version: 10.0.22631.3527 \n\n[==                         4.9%                           ] \n\nError: 3017 \n\nThe requested operation failed. A system reboot is required to roll back changes made. \n\nThe DISM log file can be found at C:\\WINDOWS\\Logs\\DISM\\dism.log\"<\/pre>\n<p>The DISM log may show the following entries:<\/p>\n<pre>Info DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=21568 TID=1556 Error in operation: (null) (CBS HRESULT=0x80070bc9) - CCbsConUIHandler::Error\nError DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=21568 TID=19684 Failed finalizing changes. - CDISMPackageManager::Internal_Finalize(hr:0x80070bc9)\nError DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=21568 TID=19684 Failed processing package changes with session options - CDISMPackageManager::Internal_ProcessChangesWithOptions(hr:0x80070bc9)\nError DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=21568 TID=19684 Failed processing package changes with session option CbsSessionOptionDetectStoreCorruption - CDISMPackageManager::ScanHealth(hr:0x80070bc9)\nError DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=21568 TID=19684 Failed to restore the image health. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ProcessCmdLine_CleanupImage(hr:0x80070bc9)\nError DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=21568 TID=19684 Failed while processing command cleanup-image. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ExecuteCmdLine(hr:0x80070bc9)<\/pre>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The error code <strong>3017<\/strong> (hex: <strong>0x80070bc9<\/strong>) or ERROR_FAIL_REBOOT_REQUIRED denotes that a restart of the client computer is pending.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>First, restart the system to complete the pending update install or rollback operation. If restarting Windows does not fix the DISM error 3017, please do the following:<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Revert Pending Actions via WinRE<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch the Windows Recovery Environment. For more info, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/access-windows-recovery-environment\/\">How to access Windows Recovery Environment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In WinRE, click <strong>Troubleshoot<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Advanced Options<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/winre-screen-system-image-recovery.png\" alt=\"win re system image backup recovery\" width=\"670\" height=\"397\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Command Prompt window, run the following command to find the drive letter of your OS partition.\n<pre class=\"cmd\">bcdedit<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/bcdedit_find_windows_drive_letter_winre.png\" alt=\"bcdedit - find windows drive letter osdevice\" width=\"750\" height=\"619\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Look for the <strong>osdevice<\/strong> value and <strong>path<\/strong> entry containing the data <strong>winload.efi<\/strong>.In the above <strong>example<\/strong>, the OS partition is drive <strong>E:\\<\/strong>. It varies from system to system.<\/li>\n<li>Type the following commands, where E: is the OS partition:\n<pre class=\"cmd\">md E:\\Temp<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">dism \/Image:E:\\ \/Cleanup-Image \/RevertPendingActions \/ScratchDir:E:\\Temp<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">ren E:\\Windows\\WinSxS\\pending.xml pending.xml.old<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Restart the system and enter Windows normally.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Fix the registry settings<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Windows normally.<\/li>\n<li>From an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a>, run these commands:\n<pre class=\"cmd\">reg load HKLM\\COMPONENTS C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\COMPONENTS<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">regedit.exe<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the Registry Editor, go to the following key:\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\COMPONENTS<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, delete the following values:\n<ul>\n<li>PendingXMLIdentifier<\/li>\n<li>ExecutionState<\/li>\n<li>RepairTransactionPended<\/li>\n<li>AIFailureInformation<\/li>\n<p><em>(Note: It&#8217;s fine if some of the above values do not exist.)<\/em>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/pendingflags-components-hive.png\" alt=\"pendingxmlidentifier\" width=\"750\" height=\"201\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 3: Set TrustedInstaller to Manual start<\/h3>\n<p>Open <strong>services.msc<\/strong> and double-click Windows Modules Installer.<\/p>\n<p>Set its Startup type to &#8220;Manual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Attempt to start the service manually. Make a note of error messages, if any.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.
