However, the font file may be in use in some cases and can&#8217;t be uninstalled via the Control Panel. You get the following error when doing so:<!--more--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">&lt;font name&gt; cannot be deleted because it's in use\n\nClose any open programs, and then click Try again.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/roboto-font-uninstall-file-in-use.png\" alt=\"cannot uninstall font - file is in use\" width=\"750\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(You may be able to uninstall the font by closing all programs or booting Windows in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/start-windows-11-or-10-safe-mode\/\">Safe mode<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>This article provides a manual uninstall method using the Registry Editor as an alternative.<\/p>\n<h2>Manually Uninstall a Font in Windows<\/h2>\n<div class=\"qt\">Let&#8217;s see how to uninstall the &#8220;Roboto Black&#8221; font in this example. If it were installed for the current user, it would be listed in registry location #2.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Additional Step: Check FontSubstitutes<\/h4>\n<p>Ensure the deleted font is not configured as a substitute for any other system font. To do so, go to the following registry keys one by one:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\FontSubstitutes\n\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\FontSubstitutes<\/pre>\n<p>If Roboto Black is configured as a substitute for any other font, delete that value.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/reset-font-default-settings-segoe-ui-windows\/\">How to Restore Default System Font Settings (to Segoe UI)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Delete the font file (.ttf)<\/h3>\n<p>After deleting the font reference in the registry, restart Windows.\u00a0Then, open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Command Prompt (admin)<\/a> and delete the respective .ttf file (i.e., Roboto-Black.ttf) from the following locations:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Windows\\Fonts<\/pre>\n<pre>%LocalAppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Fonts<\/pre>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.
