{"id":75053,"date":"2024-05-03T17:09:13","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T11:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=75053"},"modified":"2024-05-03T17:13:48","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T11:43:48","slug":"task-scheduler-permissions-disable-task","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/task-scheduler-permissions-disable-task\/","title":{"rendered":"Task Scheduler: User account does not have permission to disable the task"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you open Task Scheduler and try to disable a task, the following error message may occur even though you&#8217;re logged in to an administrator account:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The user account you are operating under does not have permission to disable the task.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/task-disable-permissions-error.png\" alt=\"user account does not have permission to disable the task\" width=\"413\" height=\"146\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above error occurs if that particular scheduled task is protected by NTFS permissions.\u00a0The scheduled task files are located under &#8220;c:\\windows\\system32\\tasks&#8221; and some of the task files in that folder have tightened NTFS permissions. Even the Administrators group has no &#8220;Full control&#8221; permissions for some built-in tasks.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, some built-in tasks such as <code>\\Microsoft\\Windows\\UpdateOrchestrator<\/code> can only be disabled or modified using the LocalSystem account.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To prevent the error &#8220;The user account you are operating under does not have permission to disable the task&#8221; when enabling or disabling a task, start Task Scheduler under the LocalSystem or TrustedInstaller accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Please check out the following articles for more information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-system-localsystem-account-windows\/\">How to Run a Program as SYSTEM (LocalSystem)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/\">How to Run a Program as TrustedInstaller<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use the &#8220;<strong>AdvancedRun<\/strong>&#8221; utility mentioned in the above articles from Nirsoft to run Task Scheduler under the LocalSystem (or TrustedInstaller) account.<\/p>\n<p>The command to launch Task Scheduler is &#8220;<strong>mmc.exe taskschd.msc<\/strong>&#8220;.
