In some cases, the association will change for a brief time, and then it will revert to Microsoft Edge as the default.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Possible Cause<\/h2>\n<p>In recent builds of Windows 10 and 11, the .PDF association registry key (i.e., &#8220;<code>.PDF\\UserChoice<\/code>&#8220;) registry key is protected by the User Choice Protection Driver (UCPD.sys).<\/p>\n<p>However, the UCPD driver is not supposed to stop you from changing the file associations via Open With or Default Apps. It&#8217;s unknown why the association change is blocked.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/set-default-browser-file-associations-command-line-windows-10\/\">Change Default Apps and File Association via Command-line<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Workaround<\/h2>\n<p>Disable the UCPD driver and its scheduled task. To do so, run these commands from an admin Command Prompt:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">sc.exe config UCPD start= disabled\n\nschtasks.exe \/change \/Disable \/TN \"\\Microsoft\\Windows\\AppxDeploymentClient\\UCPD velocity\"<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Restart Windows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Open Task Manager and end all instances of <code>msedge.exe<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can run the following command to kill all msedge.exe instances.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">taskkill \/im msedge.exe \/f<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/taskkill-msedge.png\" alt=\"taskkill all instances of microsoft edge msedge.exe\" width=\"723\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now,\u00a0see if you can change PDF associations via Default Apps or Open With.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Windows 11 23H2 and Microsoft Edge v124.0.2478.80.)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you use Default Apps or Open With to associate .PDF files with Adobe Reader or any other app, nothing may happen.
