Even though the MP3 files have embedded metadata ID3 tags, they don&#8217;t appear in the Details view in File Explorer and the Details tab of the file&#8217;s Properties.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-74881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/mp3-meta-data-blank-explorer.jpg\" alt=\"mp3 metadata columns are empty in explorer\" width=\"750\" height=\"524\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the blank metadata issue for MP3 and M4U files in File Explorer, apply the following registry edit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/mp3_meta_fix.zip\">mp3_meta_fix.reg<\/a> (zipped)<\/li>\n<li>Unzip and run the enclosed registry fix.<\/li>\n<li>Click Yes to confirm.<\/li>\n<li>Log off and log back in for the changes to take effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please ignore the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Cannot import mp3_meta_fix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes, or you have insufficient privileges to perform this operation.<\/pre>\n<p>The above error occurs because the third registry location mentioned in the registry fix cannot be updated without running Regedit.exe under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/\">TrustedInstaller privileges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, the first two entries in the registry fix should be sufficient to fix the blank metadata problem for MP3 and M4U files.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Contents of mp3_meta_fix.reg<\/h4>\n<pre>Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\PropertySystem\\PropertyHandlers\\.mp3]\n@=\"{C120DE80-FDE4-49f5-A713-E902EF062B8A}\"\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\PropertySystem\\PropertyHandlers\\.m4a]\n@=\"{f81b1b56-7613-4ee4-bc05-1fab5de5c07e}\"\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\PropertySystem\\SystemPropertyHandlers]\n\".m4a\"=\"{f81b1b56-7613-4ee4-bc05-1fab5de5c07e}\"\n\".mp3\"=\"{C120DE80-FDE4-49f5-A713-E902EF062B8A}\"<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Still does not work?<\/h4>\n<p>If the above steps do not solve the issue, run <strong>Regedit.exe<\/strong> as TrustedInstaller and import the .REG file.
