{"id":74789,"date":"2024-04-12T10:37:41","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T05:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=74789"},"modified":"2024-07-18T09:24:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T03:54:12","slug":"error-21-windows-search-service-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/error-21-windows-search-service-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Error 21: Windows Search Service Could not Start on Local Computer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you attempt to start the Windows Search (WSearch) service via the Services MMC, the following error may occur:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer\n\nError 21: The device is not ready.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-74791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wsearch-error-21.png\" alt=\"windows search service could not start - error 21\" width=\"623\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result is the same when you run the <strong>net start wsearch<\/strong> command from a Command Prompt window. It returns the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The Windows Search service could not be started.\n\nA system error has occurred.\n\nSystem error 21 has occurred.\n\nThe device is not ready.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-74790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wsearch-error-21-2.png\" alt=\"windows search service could not start - error 21\" width=\"750\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You may have tried running the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/reset-rebuild-windows-search-index-fix-problems\/#troubleshooter\">Windows Search troubleshooter<\/a> already.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>This error occurs if the &#8220;DefaultApplicationsPath&#8221; or &#8220;TempPath&#8221; registry values point to a non-existent drive letter. A user on your computer may have redirected the Windows Search data folder to a removable (USB) drive and that drive letter (e.g., E:\\ ) may now be unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, the event log entries are created:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The Windows Search Service has failed to create the new search index. Internal error &lt;1, 0x80070003, Failed to create application directory: E:\\Search\\Data\\Applications&gt;\" will be created.<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"err\">The Windows Search service terminated with the following error:\nThe device is not ready.<\/pre>\n<p>Windows Search Error 21 can also happen if the Windows Search index database (Windows.edb) is locked. The error code 21 could also mean &#8220;ERROR_LOCK_VIOLATION&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the Windows Search service error 21, follow the steps below:<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Fix the Windows Search folder paths in the registry<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/utils\/advanced_run.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AdvancedRun<\/a> from Nirsoft.net and run it.<\/li>\n<li>Using AdvancedRun, start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) as <strong>TrustedInstaller<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/advancedrun-start-regedit.png\" alt=\"advancedrun start regedit.exe\" width=\"541\" height=\"285\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-46172\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/#advancedrun\">How to Run Programs as TrustedInstaller to Modify Certain Registry Keys<\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the Registry Editor, go to the following branch:\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows Search\\Gathering Manager<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>DefaultApplicationsPath<\/strong> and set its data as follows:\n<pre>%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Applications\\<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>TempPath<\/strong> and set its data as follows:\n<pre>%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Temp\\usgthrsvc<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows Search<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>DataDirectory<\/strong> and set its data as follows:\n<pre>%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>DefaultDataDirectory<\/strong> and set its data as follows:\n<pre>%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\"><em><strong>Important:<\/strong> Make sure the registry value type of the above values is <strong>REG_EXPAND_SZ<\/strong>. If the value is REG_SZ, delete it and create a new value of type REG_EXPAND_SZ.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Attempt to start the Windows Search service now. If the same error occurs, proceed to Step 2 below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Delete the Windows Search index database<\/h3>\n<p>Open Task Manager and kill searchindexer.exe if it exists.
