Searches can be narrowed by file type, kind, file property, file extension, date, and other parameters.<\/p>\n<p>This post tells you how to use Windows Search to find files created, accessed, or modified within a given date range, in all versions of Windows, including Windows 10.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Search for files &amp; folders in a given date range<\/h2>\n<p>To search for files and folders modified between two given dates, use this query syntax:<\/p>\n<pre>datemodified:\u200e4\/\u200e1\/\u200e2019 .. \u200e4\/\u200e15\/\u200e2019<\/pre>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<pre>datemodified:&gt;=\u200e4\/\u200e1\/\u200e2019&lt;=\u200e4\/\u200e15\/\u200e2019<\/pre>\n<p>This lists files modified from April 1 \u2192 April 15, 2019.<\/p>\n<p><b>How did I know that query string, and how to use GUI to select a date range?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In the Search box, type one of these query syntaxes:<\/p>\n<pre>date:\r\ndatemodified:\r\ndateaccessed:\r\ndatecreated:\r\ndatetaken:<\/pre>\n<p><em><code>datetaken:<\/code> is for your photos taken from a camera. Windows Search queries the <strong>Date<\/strong> field from the file&#8217;s EXIF info.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once you type that, you&#8217;ll be presented with the date picker dialog box which looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/daterange1.png\" alt=\"search for files within a date range\" width=\"597\" height=\"530\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Date Picker does not pop up?<\/h4>\n<p>The date picker (calendar) may not appear in Windows 10 version 1909 and higher, due to the introduction of a new Search box\/UI. However, you can revert to the old search behavior using the Mach2 utility by Rafael Rivera.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/WithinRafael\/status\/1222258919021498368<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructions to restore the Classic Search in Windows 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download the <code>mach2<\/code> tool from its official <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/riverar\/mach2\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GitHub<\/a> page. Make sure you download the correct file, depending upon the bitness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-windows-10-build-version-edition-bit\/\">32 vs 64 bit<\/a>) of your Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Extract the ZIP archive to a folder &#8212; e.g., d:\\mach2.<\/li>\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Command Prompt as Administrator<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the folder that contains your copy of the mach2 tool. E.g.\n<pre>cd \/d d:\\mach2<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Type the following command:\n<pre>mach2 disable 18755234<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows 10.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>In this dialog, select the start date \u2192 Hold the <strong><kbd>Shift<\/kbd><\/strong> key down \u2192 select the end date. This creates a date range.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use <strong><kbd>Shift<\/kbd><\/strong> with the arrow keys ( \u2190 \u2193\u2192 \u2191) on your keyboard to select a date range.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/daterange2.png\" alt=\"search for files within a date range\" width=\"597\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To go back to the earlier years, click on the month in the date picker.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/date-range-search-month-aqs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or go even another level up, month-wise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/date-range-search-year-aqs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And further up, year-wise:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/date-range-search-year-all-aqs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"377\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the 8 preset options can also be selected, via the <strong>Date Modified<\/strong> ribbon control or via the date picker interface:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Today<\/li>\n<li>Yesterday<\/li>\n<li>This week<\/li>\n<li>Last week<\/li>\n<li>This month<\/li>\n<li>Last month<\/li>\n<li>This year<\/li>\n<li>Last year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you select a date range, the corresponding query string is populated in the search box. To find files accessed in a date range, use <code>dateaccessed:<\/code><\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;Earlier&#8221; search query<\/h4>\n<p>Other than this you can even use some vague operators such as:<\/p>\n<pre>datemodified:Earlier this month\r\ndatemodified:Earlier this year<\/pre>\n<p>When I used the <strong>Earlier this month<\/strong> query, it listed out files from the 1st week of the month (and today is 15th of the month). The search results of the <code>\"Earlier this\"<\/code> search query is relative to the current day, week, or the month.
