For example, a backup program that you use may place an icon overlay for files and folders that are backed up, and a different symbol for files that aren&#8217;t included in the backup.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While icon overlays provide great visual clues, certain icon overlays can be distracting too. See article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/blue-double-arrow-icon-files-folders-windows-10\/\">Mysterious Blue Double Arrow Icon on Files and Folders<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/norton360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mozy Backup adds the overlay that looks like below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/mozy-overlay.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"56\" border=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<h2>How to Find and Disable the Overlay Icons<\/h2>\n<h3>Option 1: Using ShellExView<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/utils\/shexview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">ShellExView<\/a> from Nirsoft has always been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-slow-right-click-crashes-shell-extensions\/\">very useful<\/a> in troubleshooting problems in the shell environment all these years, and has proved it time and again. This tool can be used to disable shell extensions, including the Icon Overlay handers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/onedrive-overlay-handlers.png\" alt=\"overlay icon handlers shellexview\" width=\"671\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sort the entries by Type column, check the Icon Overlay Handler entries, select the appropriate item. You can disable them via the right-click menu or toolbar.<\/p>\n<p><i>If you&#8217;re not able to disable the entries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-take-ownership-of-registry-keys-and-assign-full-permissions\/\">check the registry permissions<\/a> for the corresponding keys.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Option 2: Using Autoruns for Windows<\/h3>\n<p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/downloads\/autoruns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autoruns<\/a> from Microsoft Sysinternals. Right-click the Autoruns executable and choose <b>Run as Administrator<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>For some reason, the OneDrive extensions aren&#8217;t listed by Autoruns (v13.100), although I have the <b>Hide Microsoft Entries<\/b> and <b>Hide Windows Entries<\/b> options unchecked in the Options menu.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/autoruns-overlay-handlers.png\" alt=\"overlay icon handlers autoruns\" width=\"699\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can disable or delete the entries from there.<\/p>\n<h2>Inspecting the Icon Overlay Handlers Manually<\/h2>\n<p>The Icon Overlay Handlers are registered under the <code>ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers<\/code> registry key at:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\explorer\\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers<\/pre>\n<p>It shows the list of registered Overlay GUIDs.<\/p>\n<p>Export the branch to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">REG file<\/a> to back it up, and then delete the unwanted icon overlay entry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>OneDrive GUIDs:<\/h4>\n<p>OneDrive adds 7 subkeys, and they are mentioned below along with the corresponding data (a GUID):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>OneDrive1 \u2192 {BBACC218-34EA-4666-9D7A-C78F2274A524}<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive2 \u2192 {5AB7172C-9C11-405C-8DD5-AF20F3606282}<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive3 \u2192 {A78ED123-AB77-406B-9962-2A5D9D2F7F30}<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive4 \u2192 {F241C880-6982-4CE5-8CF7-7085BA96DA5A}<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive5 \u2192 {A0396A93-DC06-4AEF-BEE9-95FFCCAEF20E}<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive6 \u2192 {9AA2F32D-362A-42D9-9328-24A483E2CCC3}<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive7 \u2192 {C5FF006E-2AE9-408C-B85B-2DFDD5449D9C}<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Norton 360 GUIDs:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>OverlayExcluded\u00a0 \u2192 {4433A54A-1AC8-432F-90FC-85F045CF383C}<\/li>\n<li>OverlayPending\u00a0 \u00a0\u2192 {F17C0B1E-EF8E-4AD4-8E1B-7D7E8CB23225}<\/li>\n<li>OverlayProtected \u2192 {476D0EA3-80F9-48B5-B70B-05E677C9C148}<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Norton 360<\/h4>\n<p>Norton 360 adds a feature called &#8220;Backup Status Indicators&#8221; which clearly identifies which files have been backed up, which files are pending backup and which are excluded from backup. This feature is responsible for the Tick mark (green box) and double arrow (blue box) overlay icons.<\/p>\n<p>A check in a green box means the file&#8217;s backup is current, while a chevron (\u00bb) character in a blue box indicates a file that&#8217;s been changed since its last backup. Files excluded from the backup set display a slash in a gray box.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t need the backup indicators feature, you can turn it off by clicking <b>Settings<\/b> in the Norton 360 dashboard. The option you need to disable is <strong>Backup Status Overlays<\/strong>, or <strong>Backup Status Indicators<\/strong> in the earlier versions of Norton.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/norton-disable-backup-overlays.png\" alt=\"norton - turn off backup overlays\" width=\"752\" height=\"489\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75785\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>MozyHome Backup<\/h4>\n<p>Another program that adds a green checkmark to files, other than <b>OneDrive,<\/b> is the MozyHome Backup program. It adds a green checkmark overlay icon for files that are included in your backup list. To disable the overlay, select the <strong>Disable icon overlays in Windows Explorer<\/strong> checkbox in Mozy Options.
