Windows supports Deflate, Deflate64 compression methods.<\/p>\n<p>If the .zip file was originally compressed using BZip2, LZMA, PPMd, or any other mechanism, the Windows default compressed files handler will throw the error <code>0x80004005<\/code> as it doesn&#8217;t know how to unpack those files.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Windows 11 (and earlier systems) doesn&#8217;t support the AES-256 encryption method. Attempting to open an AES-256 encrypted password-protected file in Windows would cause the error code <code>0x80004005<\/code> or the error message <code>Windows cannot complete the extraction<\/code>. Windows supports ZipCrypto &amp; AES-128 encryption methods, though.<\/p>\n<h2>Find the Encryption and Compression methods used in a file<\/h2>\n<p>To determine which encryption and compression methods were used for a .zip file, open that file using 7-Zip. If 7-Zip opens the archive, right-click on a file inside the archive and click Properties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zip-encryption-determine-1.png\" alt=\"determine zip encryption and compression methods\" width=\"750\" height=\"551\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The resulting dialog shows the encryption algorithm and the compression method used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76261\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zip-encryption-determine-2.png\" alt=\"determine zip encryption and compression methods\" width=\"746\" height=\"578\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the above example, the file was encrypted using <strong>AES-256<\/strong> and compressed using <strong>PPMd<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the following example, the file was created from a Unix machine using the encryption method <strong>AES-256<\/strong>\u00a0and the compression method <strong>Store<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zip-encryption-determine-3.png\" alt=\"determine zip encryption and compression methods\" width=\"751\" height=\"798\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Workaround for\u00a0Zip Files Error 0x80004005<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zip-archive-tools.jpg\" alt=\"zip compression archive tools third-party\" width=\"200\" \/>If you&#8217;re using Windows default .zip (compressed folder) handler to view or extract compressed files and facing the error <code>0x80004005<\/code>, then you&#8217;ll need to use a third-party archive tool like <strong>7-Zip<\/strong>, <strong>WinRar,<\/strong> <strong>WinZip<\/strong>, or <strong>PeaZip<\/strong> to open that file.<\/p>\n<p>Those third-party tools support different compression and encryption methods, and you should be able to extract the files successfully.<\/p>\n<p>If none of the above-mentioned software can open a .zip file, it could indicate that the .zip file is corrupted.
