Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.<\/div>\n<p>This error occurs no matter which method you use in order to launch Task Manager. Running <code>taskmgr.exe<\/code> with the full path via Run dialog will also not work.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><small>(Go directly to <a href=\"#solution\">solution)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<h3>Corrupt Taskmgr.exe file? Most likely not!<\/h3>\n<p>Obviously, the first thing anyone would do is run the System File Checker (<code>sfc \/scannow<\/code> command) to see if the file <code>Taskmgr.exe<\/code> has become corrupt. Then you&#8217;ll find that the file integrity checks (signature\/file size) using <code>sfc \/verifyfile<\/code> and <code>sfc \/scanfile<\/code> would come out just fine. Yet the issue occurs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/taskmgr-sfc-integrity.png\" alt=\"sfc scan taskmgr.exe file integrity\" width=\"700\" height=\"235\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>So what&#8217;s causing the Taskmgr.exe error? The &#8220;debugger&#8221; registry setting is!<\/h3>\n<p>The error occurs due to a &#8220;debugger&#8221; registry value set for <code>Taskmgr.exe<\/code> executable. This is either done by malware. Or it could be a legitimate app, a third-party process manager which you may have installed and then removed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6351\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/procexp-replace-task-manager.png\" alt=\"process explorer - replace task manager - debugger\" width=\"321\" height=\"295\" \/>For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.in\/search?q=process+explorer+site%3Awinhelponline.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Process Explorer<\/a> utility from Microsoft Sysinternals sets the debugger registry value when you enable the setting <strong>Replace Task Manager<\/strong> via the Options menu in Process Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>As Process Explorer is a portable application, you can move the executable anywhere. If you had deleted or moved the file to a different folder, the &#8220;debugger&#8221; registry value would still be pointing to the <strong>old folder location<\/strong>. Hence the Taskmgr.exe error.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>Tip: Other legitimate uses of the debugger registry value<\/h4>\n<p>Here is a couple of legitimate and clever uses of the Image File Execution Options \u2192 Debugger registry value.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/replace-notepad-text-editor-notepad-plus-association\/\">Replace Notepad With Notepad++ or Any Other Text Editor of Your Choice<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-task-manager-administrator-default-w7-vista\/\">How to Always Start Task Manager As Administrator (Elevated) by Default?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Malware connection? Could be!<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/malware-bug-icon.png\" alt=\"malware bug icon\" width=\"64\" height=\"64\" \/>If you&#8217;re <strong>not<\/strong> using a third-party process manager and yet the error occurs, this could be a handiwork of some malware.\u00a0Some anti-malware scanners alert you about the presence of the debugger registry value, sensing it as a possible hijack attempt.<\/p>\n<pre>Security.HiJack[imageFileExecutionOptions]\r\n\r\nHKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Image File Execution Options\\TASKMGR.EXE\r\n\r\nHKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Image File Execution Options\\TASKMGR.EXE#Debugger<\/pre>\n<p>While the <code>Image File Execution Options<\/code> \u2192 <code>Debugger<\/code> registry value is to give developers the option to debug their software, malware writers make good (bad) use of this key to hijack programs. See Malwarebytes Labs article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.malwarebytes.com\/101\/2015\/12\/an-introduction-to-image-file-execution-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">An Introduction to Image File Execution Options | Malwarebytes Labs<\/a>\u00a0for more information.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"solution\"><\/a>How to Fix the &#8220;Windows cannot find Taskmgr.exe&#8221; Error?<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the error &#8216;Windows cannot find &#8216;C:\\Windows\\system32\\Taskmgr.exe&#8217;, all you need to do is remove the &#8216;debugger&#8217;, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, click Run (<kbd>WinKey<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd>)<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>Regedit.exe<\/code> and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Go to the following registry key:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Image File Execution Options\\taskmgr.exe<\/pre>\n<p>Look what the registry value named <code>Debugger<\/code> is pointing to. This tells you which program has hijacked or replaced <code>Taskmgr.exe<\/code>. In case of obscure file names appearing as the debugger, it could be malware.
