[Failed to check whether host has UEFI disk layout.] HRESULT = 0x80070003\nError CONX ConX::Compatibility::CSystemAbstraction::GetSystemVolumeNtPath: Failed to retrieve system partition NT path.\nError CONX CFreeSystemPartitionDiskSpaceChecker failed. [Failed to retrieve system volume NT path.] HRESULT = 0x80070003<\/pre>\n<p>Running the <strong>bcdedit<\/strong> command may throw the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The boot configuration data store could not be opened.\nThe requested system device cannot be found.<\/pre>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above errors are caused because the boot partition&#8217;s location could not be determined. This happens if the EFI boot partition file system is missing, corrupted, or has an incorrect identifier.<\/p>\n<p>If you open Disk Management, the EFI boot partition may incorrectly read &#8220;Primary Partition&#8221; instead of &#8220;EFI System Partition&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-61179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/diskmgmt.png\" alt=\"disk management - efi partition incorrect id - primary partition\" width=\"751\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a normal system, the EFI boot partition looks like the following in Disk Management. This is the correct identifier.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-61180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/efi-system-partition-diskmgmt.png\" alt=\"efi boot partition - disk management\" width=\"750\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the 0x80070003 &#8211; 0x20008 error, follow one of these methods:<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Fix the EFI partition&#8217;s identifier<\/h3>\n<p>Boot into Windows RE and open the Command Prompt. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/access-windows-recovery-environment\/\">How to access Windows Recovery Environment<\/a>\u00a0for details.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/winre-screen-system-image-recovery.png\" alt=\"win re system image backup recovery\" width=\"670\" height=\"397\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the WinRE Command Prompt, run the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">diskpart\n\nlist vol\n\nsel vol #\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (Replace # with the volume number of the EFI partition, which is always FAT32.)\n\nset id=c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b\n\nexit<\/pre>\n<p>Please pay more attention when selecting the volume # in the third command above. The EFI partition is always a FAT32 partition which typically has the size of 100 MB to 500 MB (but it&#8217;s not the upper limit, anyway.)<\/p>\n<p><code>c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b<\/code> is the correct identifier for the EFI boot partition. The EFI partition&#8217;s identifier is now fixed.\u00a0Reboot into Windows and see if you can install updates now.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Method 2: Format the EFI partition and rebuild the boot files<\/h3>\n<p>If that doesn&#8217;t help, formatting the EFI system partition and <strong>rebuilding<\/strong> the boot files and BCD should help.
