By default, if you drag a file or folder by a distance of 4 pixels and release the mouse button, the default &#8220;drag and drop&#8221; action (move or copy, depending on whether you are dragging it to another folder on the same drive, or to a folder on another drive.) will take place.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>With the default value set to <code>4<\/code> pixels, it is easy to inadvertently drag and drop files to a random item on your desktop or File Explorer.\u00a0If you&#8217;re not happy with the default value, you can increase the drag and drop distance (in pixels) to avoid accidental move or copy of files.\u00a0However, you&#8217;ll need to edit the registry to change the setting, as there is no GUI option available.<\/p>\n<h2>Change Drag &amp; Drop Sensitivity in the Registry<\/h2>\n<p>To change the Drag and Drop sensitivity in Windows, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Control Panel\\Desktop<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, set the data for <code>DragHeight<\/code> and <code>DragWidth<\/code> values to <code>50<\/code><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dragheight-dragwidth-sensitivity.png\" alt=\"dragheight dragwidth registry pixels\" width=\"700\" height=\"193\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6017\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor<\/li>\n<li>Logoff and login back for the change to take effect. Or simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">restart the Explorer shell<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now, in order to drag a file or folder, it has to\u00a0 be moved by at least 50 pixels in order to drop it.
