In this case, a <a href=\"#reset\">complete reset<\/a> ought to fix the problem.<\/li>\n<li>The file is not in an indexed location, so searches may run slow.<\/li>\n<li>The file type of the file you&#8217;re trying to find is not indexed.<\/li>\n<li>The file has properties that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-settings-search-no-results-found-fix\/\">prevent it from being indexed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The file has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/search-not-indexing-pdf-ms-print-to-pdf\/\">no index attribute<\/a> that prevents it from being indexed.<\/li>\n<li>The search indexer has not updated the file in its database.<\/li>\n<li>Search may be slow due to the <a href=\"#defrag\">huge<\/a> <code>Windows.edb<\/code> database<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Windows Search indexes the details and meta information of every file from included locations, your search queries fetch results quickly. This is because Windows Search fetches results from its database file (.edb) rather than searching the file system. When searching non-indexed locations, searches will be accurate but very slow as the system has to scour through every file and folder.<\/p>\n<p>Windows Search and the advanced query syntax are awesome features when they work, and indexing is one of the best features Microsoft has added to Windows.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Repair, Reset and Rebuild the Windows Search Index<\/h2>\n<h3><a id=\"troubleshooter\"><\/a> Using Search Troubleshooter<\/h3>\n<p>Most of the Search Indexing issues can be fixed using the built-in Windows Search Troubleshooter tool.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To run the search troubleshooter, right-click Start, click Run. Type the following command and click OK.\n<pre>msdt.exe -ep SystemSettings_Troubleshoot_L2 -id SearchDiagnostic<\/pre>\n<p><em>In Windows 10, you can also launch the troubleshooter via Start \u2192 Settings \u2192 Update &amp; Security \u2192 Troubleshoot \u2192 <strong>Search and Indexing<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/search-troubleshooter-settings.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - search troubleshooter\" width=\"701\" height=\"280\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li>In the troubleshooter window, click Advanced and select <strong>Apply repairs automatically<\/strong> if you want the tool to automatically fix your settings. By default, the search data folder is located at <code>%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\<\/code>. The troubleshooter can also reset the Windows Search settings and force a rebuild of the Search index if deemed necessary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"reset\"><\/a>Manually Reset Windows Search and Rebuild the Index<\/h3>\n<p>The Search troubleshooter is the most preferred way to troubleshoot search and indexing issues, as it automates many things (depending upon the checkbox options you selected).<\/p>\n<p>However, if you want to manually reset Windows Search, delete and rebuild the index, use these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor <code>regedit.exe<\/code> and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows Search<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Change the registry value <code>SetupCompletedSuccessfully<\/code> data from <code>1<\/code> to <code>0<\/code><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/search-index-reset-registry.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - setupcompletedsuccessfully\" width=\"801\" height=\"385\" \/><br \/>\n<em>The above registry change SetupCompletedSuccessfully = 0 causes Windows Search to clear custom indexed locations, add default locations, and rebuild the index from scratch.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Open the Services MMC (<code>services.msc<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Restart the Windows Search service.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5860\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/windows-search-restart.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - restart windows search service\" width=\"701\" height=\"297\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Before resetting search, this is how the Indexed Locations dialog looked like, containing many obsolete folder locations:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/index-before-reset.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - search index included locations\" width=\"400\" height=\"575\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After resetting the search, Included Locations is reset to Windows 10 defaults.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/index-after-reset.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - search index included locations reset\" width=\"400\" height=\"575\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This reset &amp; rebuild method essentially resolves most of the Windows search problems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4><a id=\"reset_rebuild_cmd\"><\/a>Reset &amp; Rebuild Search Index using command-line or batch file<\/h4>\n<p>To accomplish the above steps using the command-line\/batch file, follow the steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Copy the following contents to Notepad, and save the file as <code>reset_rebuild_search.bat<\/code>\n<pre>sc config wsearch start= disabled\r\nnet stop wsearch\r\nREG ADD \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows Search\" \/v SetupCompletedSuccessfully \/t REG_DWORD \/d 0 \/f\r\ndel \"%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Applications\\Windows\\Windows.edb\"\r\ndel \"%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Applications\\Windows\\Windows.db\"\r\n:wsearch\r\nsc config wsearch start= delayed-auto\r\nnet start wsearch\r\nIF NOT %ERRORLEVEL%==0 (goto :wsearch) ELSE goto :END\r\n:END<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/reset-rebuild-search-batch.png\" alt=\"reset rebuild search using batch file\" width=\"702\" height=\"229\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Right-click <code>reset_rebuild_search.bat<\/code> and click <strong>Run as administrator<\/strong>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/automatically-elevate-batch-file-run-administrator\/\">runs the batch file<\/a> under elevated (administrator) rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The <strong>Windows.edb<\/strong> file doesn&#8217;t exist in Windows 11. Instead, Windows 11 uses <strong>Windows.db<\/strong> which is an SQLite database file.<\/p>\n<p>This resets the search locations to default settings and rebuilds the search index from scratch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/what-is-enhanced-search-in-windows-10\/\">What is Enhanced Search (Indexing Options) in Windows 10?<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"rebuild\"><\/a>Rebuild Windows Search Index Without Resetting<\/h3>\n<p>The earlier method resets Windows Search locations and forces a rebuild of the index upon the next restart, or after restarting the Windows Search service. To rebuild just the index without resetting the indexed folder locations, use these steps:<\/p>\n<p>Click Start, type indexing, and click on Indexing Options in search results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/indexing-options.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - indexing options start menu search\" width=\"391\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In case the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/installed-apps-not-find-start-menu-search-results-background-apps-off\/\">Start menu search doesn&#8217;t work<\/a>, you can launch Indexing Options directly by running the following command from Run dialog or Command Prompt.<\/p>\n<pre>control srchadmin.dll<\/pre>\n<p>In the Indexing Options dialog, click Advanced. Under Troubleshooting section, click <strong>Rebuild<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/indexing-options-rebuild.png\" alt=\"rebuild search index via indexing options\" width=\"382\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This deletes and rebuilds the index completely.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/search-index-rebuilding.png\" alt=\"Reset and Rebuild Search Index - index is rebuilding\" width=\"491\" height=\"541\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that if Windows detects user activity in the system, indexing is slowed down drastically. After a couple of minutes of no user activity, indexing continues in full swing. Regardless, when I checked, the <code>searchindexer.exe<\/code> and its allied processes didn&#8217;t use more than 15% of the CPU at any given point in time, even when the system was left idle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4><a id=\"reset_cmd\"><\/a>Rebuild Search Index using Batch file (without resetting the locations)<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Copy the following contents to Notepad, and save the file as <code>reset_search.bat<\/code>\n<pre>sc config wsearch start= disabled\r\nnet stop search\r\ndel \"%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Applications\\Windows\\Windows.edb\"\r\ndel \"%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Applications\\Windows\\Windows.db\"\r\n:wsearch\r\nsc config wsearch start= delayed-auto\r\nnet start wsearch\r\nIF NOT %ERRORLEVEL%==0 (goto :wsearch) ELSE goto :END\r\n:END\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Windows.db is present in Windows 11. Windows.edb is for Windows 10.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <code>reset_search.bat<\/code> and click <strong>Run as administrator<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above batch file rebuilds the search index from scratch. It doesn&#8217;t reset the search index locations list, though.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-settings-search-no-results-found-fix\/\">Search Results Empty (No Results) in Windows 10 Settings Page<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"defrag\"><\/a>Defrag the Search index database Windows.edb to reduce the file size<\/h3>\n<p>If you index too many files &amp; folders and the Outlook PST files, the Windows search index database file Windows.edb would grow huge in size. In some instances, the file size can be larger than 50 GB. That&#8217;s because, in Windows 8 and Windows 10, both properties and persistent indexes are stored in Windows.edb. Also, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 index the entire contents of files, regardless of their size.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> The procedure works only in Windows 10. On Windows 11, there is no longer a <strong>Windows.edb<\/strong> JET database file. Windows 11 uses <strong>Windows.db<\/strong>, which is a SQLite Database file that can&#8217;t be compressed using esentUtl.exe.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce the Windows search index database size, index less content. Another option to reduce the size of Windows.edb is to compact or defrag the file using esentutl.exe. Follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>Open an admin Command Prompt window, and run these commands:<\/p>\n<pre>sc config wsearch start= disabled\r\nnet stop wsearch\r\nesentUtl.exe \/d %AllUsersProfile%\\Microsoft\\Search\\Data\\Applications\\Windows\\Windows.edb\r\nsc config wsearch start= delayed-auto\r\nnet start wsearch\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/compact-windows-edb-search-database.png\" alt=\"reset and rebuild windows search index\" width=\"699\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The above commands stop\/disable Windows Search, compact (defrag) the search index database, and then start Windows Search. Compaction of the <code>Windows.edb<\/code> database has reduced the size to 200 MB from 310 MB on my computer &#8212; ~30% savings.<\/p>\n<p>Resetting the Search index, or removing unwanted folder locations from the search index, and compacting the database would certainly improve the search performance in your system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you search for files on your computer using Windows Search via File Explorer or Cortana, the files you expect to find may not appear in the search results.
