And the Startup Repair tool kicks in every time and records the following error in the <code>SrtTrail.txt<\/code> log file:<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">The operating system version is incompatible with startup repair.<\/div>\n<p>This error message is not only misleading, leaving users nowhere, it also doesn&#8217;t make any sense as it appears even when not booting the computer Windows 10 Setup disk.\u00a0Here is a sample <code>SrtTrail.txt<\/code> report:<\/p>\n<pre>Startup Repair diagnosis and repair log\r\n---------------------------\r\nNumber of repair attempts: 1\r\n\r\nDetails of the session\r\n---------------------------\r\nSystem Disk = \\ Device \\ Harddisk0\r\nWindows directory =C:\\WINDOWS\r\nAutomatic check = 0\r\nNumber of major causes = 1\r\n\r\nTesting conducted:\r\n---------------------------\r\nName: Check for updates\r\nResult: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0\r\nI invested time = 25 ms\r\n\r\nMain cause found:\r\n---------------------------\r\nThe operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair<\/pre>\n<h3>What could have caused this?<\/h3>\n<p>This problem is most likely caused by an unsigned driver update installation. However, one can not rule out any rootkit infection. The Secure Boot setting in the BIOS and Windows driver signing enforcement is preventing Windows from loading an unsigned kernel-mode driver.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with Windows 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-windows-10-build-version-edition-bit\/\">version 1607<\/a>, driver signing rules will be strictly enforced by the Operating System. Windows 10 version 1607 and higher will not load any new kernel drivers which are not signed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sysdev.microsoft.com\/hardware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows Hardware Developer Portal<\/a>. Note that this OS signing enforcement is only for new OS installations, not for systems upgraded from an Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re sure that this Startup Repair problem happened after installing Windows Updates or driver updates, you can do the following things to get into Windows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Perform System Restore rollback by booting with Windows 10 Setup disk<\/li>\n<li>Turn off Secure Boot (UEFI)<\/li>\n<li>Disable Device Drivers Signature Enforcement via Startup Options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After completing the above steps, be sure to inspect your device drivers using <code>Sigverif.exe<\/code><\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Rollback your system to a previous System Restore point<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a Windows 10 DVD or bootable USB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-iso-direct-download-mct-useragent\/\">Setup disk<\/a>, boot the computer with the DVD and get into the Recovery Environment. Then perform a System Restore rollback.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Insert the Windows 10 installation DVD or bootable USB setup disk in the drive and restart your computer.<\/li>\n<li>When you see the screen that says &#8220;Press any key to boot from CD or DVD&#8221;, press any key.<\/li>\n<li>Click Repair your computer.<\/li>\n<li>Select Troubleshoot from &#8220;Choose an option&#8221; screen.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/system-restore-offline-1.png\" alt=\"Perform System Restore Rollback Offline\" width=\"698\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<li>Click System Restore in the Advanced Options screen.<\/li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5631\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5631\" style=\"width: 1014px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/advanced-recovery-options-startup.jpg\" alt=\"windows 10 advanced recovery options screen\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windows Recovery Environment &#8212; Advanced Options screen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<li>Then follow the instructions in\u00a0the tutorial\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/system-restore-rollback-windows-10-recovery-options\/\">Perform System Restore Rollback Offline Using Windows 10 Recovery Options<\/a> to rollback your system configuration to a previous\/working state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Option 2: Disable Disable Driver Signature Enforcement<\/h3>\n<p>If no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/create-restore-protection-point-rollback-windows\/\">System Restore points<\/a> exist in the system (given that Windows 10 setup disables System Restore by default), disable driver signing enforcement to circumvent the Startup Repair reboot loop.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boot into Windows Recovery Environment using the above steps.<\/li>\n<li>Click Troubleshoot, and select Advanced Options.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/system-restore-offline-1.png\" alt=\"Perform System Restore Rollback Offline\" width=\"698\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<li>Click Startup Settings and click Restart.<\/li>\n<li>Press the number on the keyboard that is displayed next to Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/w10-startup-settings.png\" alt=\"windows 10 startup settings recovery options\" width=\"700\" height=\"636\" \/>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Option 3: Disable Secure Boot<\/h3>\n<p>When Secure Boot (UEFI) is enabled, Windows will not allow kernel-mode drivers to run if they are not properly signed by a trusted certification authority. See how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/organization-used-windows-defender-application-control-block-app\/\">disable Secure Boot<\/a> in the BIOS.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5632\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/secure-boot-disabled.jpg\" alt=\"enable or disable secure boot in bios\" width=\"520\" height=\"289\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Secure Boot option in BIOS setup screen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Verify your Device Drivers Using Sigverif.exe<\/h3>\n<p>While the above methods can circumvent the error <strong>The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair<\/strong>, the real solution is to inspect and fix your device drivers.\u00a0If you&#8217;re able to boot into Windows using <strong>Step 2<\/strong> or <strong>3<\/strong> above, the next step is to inspect your current device drivers.<\/p>\n<p>The File Signature Verification tool <code>Sigverif.exe<\/code> scans for unsigned drivers in the system and writes the scanning reports to a log file named <code>sigverif.txt<\/code>. To run the Signature Verification tool to scan for unsigned drivers, right-click Start, click Run, Type <code>Sigverif.exe<\/code> and click OK. Click the Start button to begin scanning.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sigverif-signed-1.png\" alt=\"sigverif unsigned drivers\" width=\"463\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the program finishes, a list of all unsigned drivers will be displayed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5805\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5805\" style=\"width: 678px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5805\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sigverif-unsigned.jpg\" alt=\"unsigned drivers list by sigverif.exe\" width=\"688\" height=\"283\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5805\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sigverif: List of unsigned drivers (from an old computer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If no unsigned drivers are found, it would say &#8220;<em>Your files have been scanned and verified as digitally signed<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sigverif-signed-2.png\" alt=\"sigverif unsigned drivers\" width=\"355\" height=\"133\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To read the full report, click on the Advanced tab and click <strong>View log<\/strong> button to open <strong>Sigverif.txt<\/strong>. If the program finds any unsigned driver, you can either get the updated &amp; signed drivers from the respective device manufacturers, or simply uninstall the driver and disable the hardware via Device Manager.<\/p>\n<p>If the manufacturer doesn&#8217;t release signed drivers, then probably it&#8217;s time to buy a better, fully compatible hardware that supports Windows 10.<\/p>\n<h3>Block Problematic Driver Updates<\/h3>\n<p>If Windows Update repeatedly offers to install a problematic driver, use the WUShowHide.diagcab tool to block that particular driver update from being installed.
