Also, rebuilding the index does not help.\u00a0This bug seems to have appeared first in Windows Creators Update (v1703), and remains unresolved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-fall-creators-update-available-now-via-wu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fall Creators Update<\/a>\u00a0(v1709).<\/p>\n<h3>Fix 1: Allowing Background Apps Resolves the Issue<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5744\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/w10-background-apps-start-searchresults.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"119\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Redditor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Windows10\/comments\/61joue\/start_menu_search_can_not_find_installed_programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\/u\/Drimzi<\/a> has found that the Start menu search will not update if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/turn-off-background-apps-save-power-windows-10\/\">background apps<\/a> are disabled to conserve battery power.\u00a0To fix the search problem, enable the option &#8220;Let apps run in the background&#8221; in <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Privacy<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Background Apps<\/strong>. Also, the options namely <strong>All<\/strong>, <strong>Apps<\/strong>, <strong>Documents<\/strong>, <strong>Email<\/strong>, <strong>Web<\/strong>, and <strong>More options<\/strong> are missing at the top.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cortana-blank-results-white-screen-1.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Start (Cortana) Search Results Empty &amp; White Screen\" width=\"738\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how to fix the Windows 10 Start Search (Cortana) white screen issue in this section. This issue is different than the &#8220;Search not finding apps&#8221; problem. The blank white screen doesn&#8217;t sound like a Search indexing problem. Rather, it could be a malfunctioning Cortana app or a corrupted Cortana data store.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, when Cortana has no local or web results that match your keyword, it offers you the <strong>See web results<\/strong> option under <strong>Best match<\/strong>. Whereas in the above case, the entire Cortana screen is empty, just showing the white background. Follow the steps below.<\/p>\n<h3>Fix 1: Reset Cortana via App Settings<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start<\/li>\n<li>Right-click Cortana \u2192 More \u2192 App settings<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cortana-blank-results-white-screen-3.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Start (Cortana) Search Results Blank &amp; White Screen\" width=\"701\" height=\"219\" \/>This opens the Cortana app settings page directly.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Reset<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cortana-blank-results-white-screen-4.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Start (Cortana) Search Results Empty &amp; White Screen\" width=\"700\" height=\"395\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Reset<\/strong> again when you see the message &#8220;This will permanently delete the app&#8217;s data on this device, including your preferences and sign-in details.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fix 2: Reinstall Start Menu Using PowerShell<\/h3>\n<p>If resetting the Cortana app doesn&#8217;t help, try reinstalling the ShellExperienceHost and Cortana using PowerShell.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Launch <strong>PowerShell.exe<\/strong> as Administrator, and run the following command and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd>:\n<pre>Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register \"$($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml\"}<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-start-register.png?resize=599%2C128&amp;quality=100&amp;ssl=1\" width=\"599\" height=\"128\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/start-and-taskbar-stuck-windows-10-fix-shellexperiencehost\/#reinstall_start\">reinstalls<\/a> the Start menu (ShellExperienceHost). Restart Windows and see if search results page is fixed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fix 3: Rename the Cortana data folder manually<\/h3>\n<p>To rename the Cortana data folder of your user profile, you&#8217;ll need a second administrator account. This is because when you&#8217;re logged in, the Cortana data folder of your profile is in use by searchui.exe, Cryptographic Services, dllhost.exe, and other Windows processes.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Settings \u2192 Accounts \u2192 Family &amp; Other users \u2192 <strong>Add someone else to this PC<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Create a 2nd <strong>administrator<\/strong> account (say, TestUser) on your system<\/li>\n<li>Logoff the current user account (say, User1)<\/li>\n<li>Log in to the newly created administrator account.<\/li>\n<li>Open File Explorer and browse the following folder (of <em>User1<\/em>):\n<pre>C:\\Users\\{User1}\\AppData\\Local\\Packages\\<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Rename <code>Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy<\/code> to <code>Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy - OLD<\/code><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/w10-cortana-folder-rename.png\" alt=\"start search not launching programs - white screen\" width=\"700\" height=\"181\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Logoff the new user account<\/li>\n<li>Log in to your original account (User1)<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall Cortana again as mentioned in Fix 2.<\/li>\n<li>Delete the newly created (TestUser) user account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many users have indicated that renaming the Cortana data folder from a 2nd account has resolved the empty &amp; white Cortana search results issue.<\/p>\n<h4>[Solved] Programs can&#8217;t be launched from Start Search results<\/h4>\n<p>Resetting the Cortana data folder as in Fix #3 above <strong>also<\/strong> fixes a problem where when you search for a program via the Start menu, <strong>programs don&#8217;t start<\/strong> when launched from Cortana Search results.
