Master Boot Record (MBR) disks use the standard BIOS partition table. GUID partition table (GPT) disks use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The boot files reside in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/what-is-system-reserved-partition-in-disk-management\/\">System Reserved<\/a> partition (or sometimes stored in the OS partition itself) on MBR disks. On GPT-based disks, the boot files are located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/rebuild-efi-partition-bcd-boot-files\/\">EFI boot<\/a> partition (FAT32).<\/p>\n<p>Boot Configuration Database (BCD) location in MBR-based system: <code>\\Boot\\BCD<\/code><br \/>\nBoot Configuration Database (BCD) location in EFI-based system: <code>\\EFI\\Microsoft\\Boot\\BCD<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This article tells you how to find if a disk uses GPT or MBR partitioning scheme.<\/p>\n<h2>Find if a Disk uses MBR or GPT Partitioning Scheme<\/h2>\n<h3>Using Disk Management<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, and click Disk Management.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the Disk (such as Disk 0) that contains the System Reserved partition or the &#8220;EFI&#8221; (FAT32) partition, and select Properties.\n<div class=\"newline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6338 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>Ensure you right-click the Disk # tab on the left. Instead, if you right-click on the SRP\/EFI partition itself, you won&#8217;t see the Properties option.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/diskmgmt-mbr-find.png\" alt=\"find mbr or gpt partition\" width=\"751\" height=\"319\" \/><\/div>\n<p><em>(Typically, the EFI boot partition may have the volume label &#8220;EFI&#8221;, &#8220;ESP&#8221;, or &#8220;System&#8221;, or may have no label at all. But it&#8217;s easy to identify the partition because it&#8217;s always a FAT32 partition, with the size ranging from 100 MB to around 500 MB.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>In the Volumes tab, you can determine the Partition Style.
