Software installed inside the Windows Sandbox environment remains &#8220;sandboxed&#8221; and runs separately from the host machine.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A sandbox is temporary. All the software, files, and the state are deleted when it&#8217;s closed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows Sandbox &#8211; Prerequisites<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ARM64 (for Windows 11, version 22H2 and later) or AMD64 architecture<\/li>\n<li>Virtualization capabilities enabled in BIOS<\/li>\n<li>At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)<\/li>\n<li>At least 1 GB of free disk space (SSD recommended)<\/li>\n<li>At least two CPU cores (four cores with hyper-threading recommended)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>(Windows Sandbox is unavailable on the Windows 10\/11 Home edition. However, copying the required package files from a Pro system enables Windows Sandbox on Windows 10\/11 Home Edition. But this is not an officially supported method.)<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\"><strong>Install Windows Sandbox<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#gui\">Using the Windows Features dialog<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#dism\">Using DISM<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#psh\">Using PowerShell<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#check\">INFO: Check the status of the Windows Sandbox feature<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Installing Windows Sandbox<\/h2>\n<h3><a id=\"gui\"><\/a>Using the &#8220;Windows Features&#8221; dialog<\/h3>\n<p>Right-click Start, and click Run. Type <code><strong>OptionalFeatures.exe<\/strong><\/code> and click OK.<\/p>\n<p>In the Windows Features dialog, enable &#8220;Windows Sandbox&#8221; and click OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56917\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/windows-sandbox-1.png\" alt=\"install Windows Sandbox via OptionalFeatures.exe\" width=\"733\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> In some cases, the entry may be already enabled, but Windows Sandbox (<code>WindowsSandbox.exe<\/code>) may be nowhere to be found on your computer. In that case, <strong>uncheck<\/strong> the Windows Sandbox entry and reboot. After rebooting, <strong>reenable<\/strong> the Windows Sandbox entry, and reboot if prompted.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"dism\"><\/a>Using DISM to install Windows Sandbox<\/h3>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a>, run the following commands to uninstall and reinstall Windows Sandbox:<\/p>\n<p><em>(It will be effective to uninstall the feature and then reinstall it. This clears any remnant files and registry entries.)<\/em><\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">dism \/online \/Disable-Feature \/FeatureName:\"Containers-DisposableClientVM\"<\/pre>\n<p>Restart Windows,<\/p>\n<p>And then run the following command to install Windows Sandbox:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">dism \/online \/Enable-Feature \/FeatureName:\"Containers-DisposableClientVM\" -All<\/pre>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"psh\"><\/a>Using PowerShell to install Windows Sandbox<\/h3>\n<p>From the <strong>admin<\/strong> PowerShell window, run the following commands\u00a0 to uninstall and reinstall Windows Sandbox:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"powershell\">Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName \"Containers-DisposableClientVM\" -Online<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"powershell\">Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName \"Containers-DisposableClientVM\" -All -Online<\/pre>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"check\"><\/a>Check the status of the Windows Sandbox feature<\/h3>\n<p>To know if the Windows Sandbox feature is installed, you may run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">dism \/online \/get-featureinfo \/featurename:Containers-DisposableClientVM<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Sample output:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool<br \/>\nVersion: 10.0.19041.844<\/p>\n<p>Image Version: 10.0.19045.3086<\/p>\n<p>Feature Information:<\/p>\n<p>Feature Name : Containers-DisposableClientVM<br \/>\nDisplay Name : Windows Sandbox<br \/>\nDescription : Enables the dependencies required to run Windows Sandbox scenarios.<br \/>\nRestart Required : Possible<br \/>\nState : Enabled<\/p>\n<p>Custom Properties:<br \/>\n(No custom properties found)<\/p>\n<p>The operation completed successfully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I hope that helps!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article explains how to uninstall and reinstall Windows Sandbox in Windows 10 and 11.
