By default, WinRE is preinstalled into Windows 10 and Windows 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/winre-screen-system-image-recovery.png\" alt=\"win re system image backup recovery\" width=\"670\" height=\"397\" \/><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>WinRE has the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start recovery, troubleshooting, and diagnostic tools.\n<div class=\"newline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/system-restore-rollback-windows-10-recovery-options\/\"><em>(System Restore<\/em><\/a>, Startup Repair, Startup Settings, Command Prompt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/restore-system-image-backup-windows-11\/\">System Image Recovery<\/a>, etc., are valuable tools in Windows RE. Also, from the Command Prompt window, you can run Regedit.exe, Notepad.exe, Chkdsk, DISM, Sfc.exe, etc.)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Boot from a device (UEFI only).<\/li>\n<li>Access the Firmware menu (UEFI only).<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Choose which operating system to boot, if multiple operating systems are installed on the PC.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/cant-reset-windows-10-could-not-find-win-re\/\">WinRE.wim<\/a> is the image file, usually located in the hard disk&#8217;s &#8220;Recovery&#8221; partition, responsible for loading Windows RE.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how to access the Windows Recovery Environment in Windows 10 and 11. This boots the computer into WinRE.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/system-restore-offline-0.png\" alt=\"Perform System Restore Rollback Offline\" width=\"700\" height=\"234\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4><a id=\"secure\"><\/a>From from Ctrl+Alt+Del (Secure Desktop) Screen<\/h4>\n<p>You can also use the secure desktop to access the Power button. It works whether you&#8217;re logged in to your account or at the sign-in screen.<\/p>\n<p>Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to open the secure desktop screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56617\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ctrl-alt-del-secure-screen.png\" alt=\"ctrl+alt+del security desktop screen\" width=\"750\" height=\"556\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click the Power button, press and hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key, and click <strong>Restart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: The above screen appears in the black background on Windows 11.<\/em>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"shutdown\"><\/a>4) Using the Shutdown.exe utility<\/h3>\n<p>You can boot into Windows RE by running the following command from a Command Prompt window, Windows Terminal, or via the Start \u2192 Run dialog.<\/p>\n<pre>shutdown.exe \/r \/o \/f \/t 0<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p><strong>More info:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code><strong>\/r<\/strong><\/code> Full shutdown and restart the computer.<\/li>\n<li><code><strong> \/o<\/strong><\/code> Go to the advanced boot options menu and restart the computer. Must be used with <code>\/r<\/code> option.<\/li>\n<li><code><strong> \/t xx<\/strong><\/code> Set the time-out period before shutdown to xxx seconds. The valid range is 0-315360000 (10 years), with a default of 30. If the timeout period is greater than 0, the \/f parameter is implied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"usbboot\"><\/a>5) Access Windows RE using USB Setup disk<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Boot the system using your Windows installation media or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/create-a-recovery-drive-refresh-reinstall-windows-10\/\">Recovery drive<\/a> if you&#8217;ve created one already. If you have none, download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-iso-direct-download-mct-useragent\/\">Windows 10 or 11 ISO<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-iso-to-usb-dvd-tool-bootable-media\/\">create bootable media<\/a>. If you can&#8217;t start Windows, download and create the setup disk from another computer.\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>To boot from the USB setup disk, you may need to access the one-time boot menu by pressing the appropriate key on your keyboard after the system is powered on. The one-time boot menu key may vary for each Motherboard model. Check with your board manual for more information.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/usb-one-time-boot-menu.png\" alt=\"Boot USB - one-time boot menu\" width=\"444\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, enter the BIOS\/UEFI settings and change the boot order to a USB disk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>On the Windows setup page, click Next.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>(<strong>Tip:<\/strong> At this point, you can press <code>Shift<\/code> + <code>F10<\/code> to open a Command Prompt window quickly, if you want.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <b>Repair your computer<\/b>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6027\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/w10-winre-recovery-1.png\" alt=\"windows 10\/11 setup - repair your computer\" width=\"700\" height=\"511\" \/><\/li>\n<li>This launches WinRE.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"failboot\"><\/a>6) Access Windows RE after 2 or 3 failed boot attempts<\/h3>\n<p>Here is an emergency method that can be used as the last option.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Thanks to Microsoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20161206-00\/?p=94865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raymond Chen<\/a> for this technique.)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn off your computer.<\/li>\n<li>Turn on the computer. While it is booting, turn off the power. You may need to hold the power button for 4-5 seconds to power the unit off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Repeat<\/strong> the off\/on steps three times.<\/p>\n<p>Turn on the computer and wait.\u00a0After three failed reboot attempts, Windows goes into recovery mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/diagnosing-your-pc-startup-repair.jpg\" alt=\"startup repair - diagnosing your pc\" width=\"477\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should see the &#8220;Automatic Repair&#8221; &#8220;Diagnosing your PC&#8221; screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/startup-repair-advanced-options.png\" alt=\"Automatic repair - Startup repair - Windows Recovery\" width=\"751\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Sometimes, you may see the &#8220;<strong>See advanced repair options<\/strong>&#8221; button instead of &#8220;<strong>Advanced options<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Click &#8220;See advanced repair options&#8221; or &#8220;Advanced options&#8221; will open Windows RE.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Additional note<\/h4>\n<p>WinRE starts automatically after detecting the following issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two consecutive failed attempts to start Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Two consecutive unexpected shutdowns that occur within two minutes of boot completion.<\/li>\n<li>Two consecutive system reboots within two minutes of boot completion.<\/li>\n<li>A Secure Boot error (except for issues related to Bootmgr.efi).<\/li>\n<li>A BitLocker error on touch-only devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>I hope that helps.
