These &#8220;online&#8221; files in your OneDrive folder are shown with the blue cloud icon, indicating that they&#8217;re just placeholders where the real files exist only in the cloud.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5578\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5578\" style=\"width: 689px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/onedrive-on-demand-cloud-only-file.png\" alt=\"onedrive on-demand online file\" width=\"699\" height=\"365\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OneDrive Files On-Demand : &#8220;Cloud&#8221; file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These files appear like normal files and File Explorer shows the full file size although they&#8217;re 0-byte files.<\/p>\n<p><small><strong>Hint:<\/strong> To make a file available only online, open the OneDrive folder, right-click on the file and click <code>Free up space<\/code> option. OneDrive Personal is <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/all\/onedrive-not-blocking-apps-from-downloading-files\/6e598849-f338-40f3-b4c1-96ee7c545043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no longer blocking apps<\/a> from downloading files with Files on Demand. However, I&#8217;m making this article still available for informational purposes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When you access the &#8220;online&#8221; file manually or when an app accesses it, the file is downloaded on demand.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Microsoft wants to make sure that the user is in control of all file downloads from the OneDrive cloud. When an app tries to open an &#8220;online&#8221; file, OneDrive app shows a message displaying: what&#8217;s being downloaded, which app is requesting the download, and options to dismiss the message, cancel the download, or block the app from downloading.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5583\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/on-demand-cancel-block-2.png\" alt=\"onedrive automatic download cancel or block\" width=\"699\" height=\"313\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5582\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/on-demand-cancel-block-1.png\" alt=\"onedrive automatic download cancel or block\" width=\"698\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve inadvertently blocked an app, you can unblock apps in <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Privacy<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Automatic file downloads<\/strong> (in Insider builds, the option was named &#8220;App-requested downloads&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5579\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/onedrive-on-demand-allow-all-settings.png\" alt=\"onedrive on-demand unblock all apps automatic file downloads\" width=\"696\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Block or unblock individual apps?<\/h4>\n<p>Note that there is no option to allow or disallow individual apps via the Settings user interface. The list of &#8220;Automatic file downloads&#8221; blocked apps listing is stored in the following registry key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\CloudFiles\\BlockedApps<\/pre>\n<p>For each blocked application, a subkey is created which stores the App Name, Path and Package Name (in case of Store Apps).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/onedrive-on-demand-registry-unblock.png\" alt=\"onedrive on-demand allow registry app unblock\" width=\"699\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To enable a particular app from downloading OneDrive On-Demand files, double-click the DWORD value <code>Enabled<\/code> and set its data to <code>0<\/code>.
